i have a 1973 CJ5 . i was wanting to put a 3" to 4" lift on it. im not sure what my options are. i dont know if i need to get shackles and longer leaf springs or what. any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'd keep the total lift under 4". Ideally, a 2.5" suspension lift with a 1" body lift will allow you to run 33's. And with a bit of trimming you should be able to get 35's under it. But the bigger the tire, the more stress on the axles.

You will find that modifying one thing, will necessitate modifying something else. Which is why you really need to define how and where you intend to use the Jeep.

I just purchased new body mounts for my wife's jeep. Is this where the body lifts are done as well?

So if we decide to do a 1" body lift, do I still need the new body mounts? The body lift is not replacing the body mounts. Confusing myself here. :)
The body lift replaces the body mounts with thicker ones.

I used both the list and the mounts... The lift pucks are too hard in my oppinion to use at the mount bushings. Don't allow for enough flex when you need it.

But I have heard it both ways.

Agreed. My CJ7 has 35s and beyond the lift Ive had to upgrade all the steering components. I got a heavy duty tie rod , drag link and ends along with a heavy duty steering box mount. I could see the stock one flex when I had someone turn the wheels. Now Im looking at a new steering shaft and some brake upgrades as well.

Thank you gentlemen. I just purchased new Prothane body mounts and didn't know if I should return them and just go with a 1" body lift. Then there's the question of 2.5 or 4 inch lift. She wants 33's and it's only a grocery getter with an occasional trip through the river bed. 2.5 with a 1" body is what I'm leaning to?

I would think that should work, I run 31s on a stock one and wheel it hard.
