Alright you'll have to deal with me a little bit as i like to dream sometimes, but i was looking around my place the other day when i realized i have a complete drivetrain just sitting around along with all the steering conponents and the axles, has anybody ever gotten the idea to build a SMALL one maybe two seat tube buggy almost completely out of spare jeep parts and run like 33's or 35's to be able to use the axles?

I've had that idea for some time now :)

Yea like that cummins buggy except with all jeep parts. i mean the parts are all good so why not use them anyways, sure there not as strong as the ones we replace them with but if you remove all the weight there would be a ton less stress on them so they might work. also can you imagine where that thing would be able to fit if it was really that small:drool:

another random idea what if you used a marine motor since they turn backwards you could use all the other stock parts and mount the engine in the rear, you'd just have to figure out how to mount your Transmission and tcase:D:D

Heres a better idea (that I stole off Pirate4x4).
Use a front wheel drive, transverse mounted engine/transaxle, turn it so the driveshafts are pointed at the differentials, and set it up that way.
An auto Transmission would give you unlimited crawl ratios with no clutch hassles. It should be fuel injected, so no carb troubles. and it would be pretty compact for a single seater buggy.

They did that same build on Xtreme 4x4. They used mini truck axles, and a small 4 cyl transverse motor, that they rear mounted.

yea but thats cool but im trying to use all jeep parts, i figured i have both a AMC 304 and a Dauntless Buick 225 V6 225 and they used the 225 as a marine motor so if you could figure out how to convert it to marine rotation you could use the jeep drivetrain. as long as you left the engine facing the back you couls mount the tranny there too and it would still work other than your shift pattern being backwards

something like this would be awesome

IMO, for a buggy, that is way to high. The idea is spot on, though. I say if you have the parts, and the tools to build your own buggy, why not?

Heres one that was jeep yj based although alot of it isn't jeep anymore

that yj based one looks pretty sick. i know not all marine motors are reverse rotation but i am fairly certain that a 225 marine motor was. but i could still be wrong on that. the only tool i dont have is a tubing bender lol. how hard are the manual ones to use?

how small are you wanting this thing? I was thinking of shortening the long axle tube off a Dana 30 so it would fit the short side axle on both sides and making a very small buggy. I think it would come out to about 36" WMS or so.
I haven't figured out a rear axle yet.

havent really set a specific size but i want it to be small enough that a 225 odd fire could pull it like it should. i also want to use all the jeep parts i have so it would be pretty small. but it has to stay big enough to fit a person in it and be able to wheel it?

Alright guys know i'm digging an old post back up but a friend and i got crazy and picked up an 86 CJ7 frame today, think we're gonna try our luck at building this spare parts rig. the frame in in pretty bad shape right now (had to cut it in half to fit in in the car) and has a section in the middle about 4 feet that needs to be replaced/ cut out all together but too good of a deal to resist. tomorrow after classes are over we're gonna try to clean it up a little and se what we can salvage from it. any more ideas anyone?

Unless you're an expert welder and fabricator, this setup will probably cost a lot more than a new tub.
Also if you go this far, get rid on the leaf springs and go with a multi-link coil-over suspension.

I always thought of doing thin with one of the million odd Cherokees you can find for next to nothing.
I figure with the right package you could start another craze like the VW dune buggy.:D

2 words: Build Thread. :)
