Weird thing started to happen. When I accelerate, it hesitates, for about 1 second then goes as normal. It seems to happen once I shift into any gear and accelerate. It idles fine and never actually dies. But it is hard to start when cold, glad I have a good battery. I am thinking that I might need to have my carb rebuilt and cleaned

Hesitation upon acceleration is usually a bad accelerator pump in the carb. Hard to start when cold could mean an empty float bowl caused by a leak or evaporation.

Oh, that makes sense! I might check that out tonight. What would a good rebuild on this Carter cost?

I took my BBD to a pro years ago, first time I have ever let someone else do it. it was expensive but well worth it. I think its a :dung: shoot to find a good shop and hope you get what you pay for. Good Luck!

So $200 is not unheard of then?

I bought a rebuilt one from Carquest and paid around $350 and it ran like :dung: turned out the metering rods were sticking. so $200 sounds like a good deal if they stand behind their work and it comes with a warranty.

A rebuild kit only runs about $15 at OReillys/Checker. If you are not in a hurry you could try it. You could get help on here or by searching. If not you are not out much if there are still issues.

True, I might give it a go and see how it turns out.

Hesitation on "Tip In" can be too rich or too lean, when talking about Carb's. Other, when talking about timing.

1. Too rich typically results in an exhaust "backfire". Very embarrassing.

2. Too lean, usually results in a "Carb Sneeze".

Both are related to carb settings and spark timing.

One thing to look at is distributor springs. If they are rusted or broken you will not get the advance needed.

Are your vaccum lines correct?

Do yourself a favor, if you haven't rebuilt 1 of these, and have a camera handy when you take that carb apart. Take pic's of of all the linkage in location and when you take the cover off of the main rods, there is a funky lil spring in there that has to go back in right. Make sure to take notes when you can and watch for check balls. Good luck on yer rebuild

Excelent advice. Parts Left Over is NOT the sign of a good job!
