I have a 83 CJ7 with a the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I am considering upgrading to a Holley sniper efi. I am looking at the Holley sniper master kit. Does anyone have any experience with this kit? I am wondering if it contains everything I will need for the conversation. I have been told by my brother that I will need a coil driver as well. He had to put one on his 79 cj. Also any thoughts on the pros and cons of external vs internal fuel pumps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am also interested in this discussion.
Hope you don't mind me asking a few questions as well.

I am currently running a 4 barrel eidelbrock and am thinking of changing.

From what I understand so far you need a set of higher pressure fuel lines front to back.

A high pressure gauge under the hood is a nice to have.

Possibly a fuel regulator with a bypass but not sure on that one.

The pump in the tank is supposed to run cooler ( and quieter) but is harder to get to.

By coil driver do you mean an ignition module? Like an MSD? I have an MSD Streetfire in my 85 now.

Fuel filter on modern snap lock fittings is a good idea. (My new high pressure lines are vinyl.

Block off plate for the old mechanical fuel pump.

I don't know if the 1 inch riser/leveling plate on my Offy intake should stay or not.

Will the dual plane Offy mess with the sniper "smarts"?

Does the fuel tank need to change?

Tank still needs a vent right?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have seen the Holley video of the system install that is on their site, it was pretty complete and informative but that's it. I was thinking of going to injection too but would rather stay with a carb for now.

I bought the Holley Sniper set up for my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I rebuilt. Everything looks really nice. No feedback yet. Still running around on my old engine. There are a few people here that have done it and will give you the info you need.

I'll have to watch this closely as well. Thinking this would be a good add when I swap in the new AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . The option with the kit isn't explained very well in Quadratec's catalog. The kit version is about the same price as the Howell unit. Gonna have to compare the two.

Gr8Dain ran one in his '84 Scrambler for several months.

He ended up swapping out his AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (unforseen circumstance)...otherwise, he'd still be running it.

I asked him about how he liked it as I was interested in one myself. He told me he'd do it all over again without hesitation.

I'm sure he'll chime in when he sees this post

We put a 2bbl Sniper on a few years ago to replace our MC2100 and absolutely love it! I just felt that a 4bbl Sniper on a relatively stock AMC 304 was a bit of an over kill. It's on a AMC 304 , so the installation will not be exactly as I did ours. I mounted it on an Edelbrock 4bbl intake, so I had to get an adapter, and make a mounting plate to go between the Sniper and the manifold to solve a vacuum leak. I went with an in tank fuel pump, but this was primarily to solve vapor problems at high altitude. If you only operate at lower altitudes, an external pump should be adequate. Just make sure that you mount it as low as you can relative to the bottom of the fuel tank. I decided to try it out without having it control engine timing for awhile to see if I needed that option. So far, I can see no reason to spend the money for timing control since the Sniper does everything that I want it to do at high or low altitude.
One of the really nice things about the conversion is that now I can crawl rocks and be on 45° or greater angles, and the engine doesn't die.
Here is a link to our build thread showing the Sniper and in tank fuel pump installs. https://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f98/79-cj7-they-re-coming-take-me-away-aha-24761/index10.html

I have the 4bbl Sniper on a AMC 304 . I did have the Offenhauser intake with an Edelbrock Performer. The Sniper kit did not coexist well with the Offenhauser, so I found a used Edelbrock on CL and it was swapped out. As a previous poster stated, the 4bbl setup is probably overkill for a AMC 304 . The gentleman who tuned the Sniper EFI in my Jeep spent hours on the phone with Holley tech. It is running great now.

I just put a fresh AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in my CJ (remanned motor) and swapped to the sniper efi as well as DUI HEI.

I'm not controlling timing and using the external fuel pump mounted on the frame rail.

Pump's kind of noisy and i have about 120mi on the jeep now since i did the work, seems to run extremely well and cold starts are literally instant.

Absolutely get the master kit. Has most everything you’ll need. I went with the included external pump.
