Started working on taking out the manual steering box to put in power steering in my 84 CJ7 . Well of course all the bracket bolts to the frame spun and had to be cut. Any idea how I’m going to be able to put new bolts and nuts in?

I would ditch the original mouting bracketry and get the heavy duty one from MORE. And then, of course, use new bolts. But if the nuts that are originally welded to the frame are shot, then you have a problem.

Yup. They were an issue. Had to torch them off. Possibly dealing with that issue today. Not sure which route I’m gonna take yet.

Another option is if captured nut is completly gone. Weld a tab on a nut and fish it into place, insert bolt, capture the nut and start turning the bolt the tab will hit the frame so you tighten the bolt down. I used this method a couple of times on other projects, unfortunately on my jeep the bolt just broke off and had to be tapped out.

Use a die grinder to cut a "window" into the frame. Save the cutout piece. Mount the new box and back weld the nut through the window. Then weld the cutout piece back in.

Damned boxed frames.

Another option is to drill out the nuts (broken bolt and all) with the correct drill bit and tap new threads with the next bigger size. I think it’s a jump from 7/16 to 1/2 inch bolt size, same thread pitch. Might be too late by now.

One 'Upgrade' that fixes your issue...
Tube gussets THROUGH the frame, so a nut & bolt doesn't bend/flatten a boxed frame.
This allows you to use reinforcement plates *IF* you need them.

Tube gussets are stupid easy, and depending on the tube you pick, can be threaded for bolts or used as pass through sleeves that spread/reinforce the box force on the frame.

It's simply hacking off tubing to length in it's most simple form,
The ability to apply some spot welds on washers or to frame makes it even more useful.

Just an idea, use it if you can...
