The more I look at my new-to-me CJ7 I am beginning to think that there is a small amount of lift in the suspension. Is there an easy way to determine if there is any lift?

Post a pic side view with what size tire you are running and we should be able to tell you.

Here is a picture of the Jeep. Tires are 30 x 9.50 x 15.

Can't really tell by that picture (it's too far away) but the shackles look stock. Can you take a shot of the front suspension from about the 2 o'clock position? Stock tires were 29", I believe L78x15, the L may be wrong. But from that picture it looks real close to stock. Why is it you ask?

I ask because it just looks tall for some reason. Maybe it's because most of the jeeps I see are YJ's and TJ's and they are wider.

The other reason I ask is that the skid pan in the middle of the jeep has a small stack of roughly 1/8" thick shims between it and the frame (maybe 1" total). It doesn't look like something that is stock, and I was wondering if there was a Transfer Case drop done to accommodate a lift. The P.O. did not say it was lifted, but he was not the original owner either.

I'll try to get some better pictures tonight if it stops raining.

YJ's and TJ's are not Jeeps, they are Wranglers. Hard to compare to. Maybe the original owner did have a lift on it but had removed it. Can't think of another reason to lower the skid plate.

It looks like it sits a little taller than mine it may have a 2'' lift.

Here are pictures of the front, rear, and skid plate shims.

Boy I don't know. Everything looks stock. Those are stock shackles, the springs don't have much arch so they are probably stock. I don't know why he/she would have shimmed the skid unless it's just a leftover from a now removed spring lift kit.

That All looks identical to my 79 CJ5 . My skid plate is also shimmed. I was under the understanding that they came that way from the factory to accommodate the bigger T-18 Transmission . I see that you have that tranny in your sig.

Hey sjc,

A little of your original post. I just bought a 1979 CJ5 with the same drivetrain as yours. My question is when you have the engine running and tranny in N do you have any noise coming from the tranny and or Transfer Case ? The reason I ask is mine seems to be a bit noisy, and im not sure why? I am used to the sounds of my 80 cj with different drivetrain.

Being new to Jeeps, I can't really answer your question. But, it does not sound like it makes any noise that is out of the ordinary.
