Hey gus, I have a 80 CJ5 with a pretty rusty tub, and I also have a 77 CJ5 parts jeep with a solid tub on it. I've been prepping the 77 tub to be transfered o er to the 80 chassis when my wonderful wife asked how i was going to change the vin over. I felt stupid, and here i am. I live in Missouri and have the titles for both jeeps, but for licences, personal property, ins and such i would really like to just change the vins. For those of you who have swapped out tubs before how do you legally change the vins? I really need your help on this as the project is on hold untill this is fixed.

Have you contacted your local DMV? I personally would just swap the tags, but then again I run with scissors so what do I know ;)

Each sate has their own rules and requirements. Whilch means a proper vin tag replacement from one in one state might not pass muster in another.

The VIN is stamped on the frame as well so keeping the VIN with the frame is key in my book. I swapped to a glass body on mine and the DMV and emissions centers never said a word to me otherwise.

where is it stamped to the frame? I have never seen that while crawling under my Jeep. Just knowing what I know about Jeep I would think it would more likely be a tag then a stamp in the frame.

Tell your Wonderful Wife you're going to cut the VIN put with tin snips and weld it onto the replacement body, and Bob's Your Uncle!

I think you, like me, "married up". Congrats!

It's a stamp, and it's on top of the frame.

On my 77 it's located on the topside of the passenger side rear wheel hump.

Yes that is where mine is located on my 5 and my 8. It is usually not very legible due to dirt and paint.

Having built several ASPT cars, and titled a jeep or two with other VIN numbers...In Florida the T&L manual at the local tag office is the source for final word. Drop in to your tag office (if you can't get that online) and have a nice lady copy the salvage/rebuilt/built from parts pages.

Washington is one of only a few states where you can get jacked by troopers who will (roadside) check your frame against your VIN tag. If they don't match, you better have the approved documentation from the state of registry.

Otherwise, your state may have specific rules (per the T&L book) that you should follow. Discover whether the title passes with the frame or with the tub first...There will be language regarding a major part replacement that will outline what you need to do. It MAY be nothing, or it could be as complicated as having an inspection and getting a state issued VIN sticker.

The vin tag by the windshield is riveted to a piece of sheet metal that bolts on by the wiper motor it's easy to switch and know one would ever know. The one on the firewall has just standard rivets that you can drill out and rivet it back on your other tub.

Ca does not 'switch-VINS'. You are issued a new one.
Major headache to get done.
After 1977-Vins were put in hidden locations for just this reason, and the police know where to look.
