I finally got my new 73 CJ5 goin after a new motor, rebuilt Transmission , clutch, ect. Now I need to get to where i can drive it over 40mph without fearing for my life. It wanders like crazy and if I hit any sort of bump, its very scary. Even applying the brakes it wants to dart into the other lane. I am going to flip the steering arm over to decrease the angle, but I need to know how to check the caster angle. Im sure it was never set when it was lifted. it currently has 35x12.50 thornbirds on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I check my caster angle by placing a protractor/level under the lower ball joint on the front axle. You probably have other issues like worn suspension rod ends. The toe-in might need to be checked by using a tape measure and there should be around 1/8 to 3/16" toe-in with a tire that size.

I will check toe and caster. Thanks! I did replace the steering column knuckle, but the steering rod end is loose. Im sure there is more going on than just the loose rod end, but im sure it doesnt help matters. Thanks again.

Caster is exactly 4.1 degrees. Ive heard 5-8 is optimal. Is 4.1 enough? If not, is there an easy solution other than cutting off spring perches, rotating, then rewelding?

Best way is like you said but you could install STEEL axle shims. To get you to where you want to be. That would at least let you see the impact it has before you cut and weld.

Sounds like you have other issues too, much like I have. I just went through the entire steering system but have not road tested yet, still putting things back together. I have looked at the tie rid flip too but have not done that. Would be interested how yours goes.

Axle caster is 4.1 right now. Im going to get shims. Question is would it be better to get 2' or 4' shims?

I am way not an expert but I would go with as little as possible. In this case the 2' it would put you near the middle of the range recommended. Try it and see what kind of result you get.
