Just got my new heavy duty steering shaft and started to install it. had the old one out and was waiting all day for it to be delivered. It slipped right onto the steering column end with no problems but when I go to attach it to the steering box the its too large for the spline shaft on the stering box. I have a 79 CJ7 with power steering. No instructions came with the shaft. Any ideas?

Humm, Your PS gear box is original equip? and the new shaft spline is too big:wtf:As far as my experience goes on the Saginaw box is you have aa smaller spline for the manuals and a larger spline for the power units but an even larger one yet I don't know about.

I just Googled your part # and it says 76-86 models so it appears the # is at least correct.

As far as I know everything is original. How can I tell?

Do you have calipers to measure your shaft?
Not sure it will help you but I have my old manual box and the shaft on it is 3/4" outside spline diameter. can't measure my ps shaft without talking apart but it's either 7/8" or 1" if memory serves.

Mine is 3/4". But it is power steering. I was searching posts about this on another forum and read where someone claims to have drilled and tapped a manual box for power pump lines. Do you think this is the case here?

No, It does not work like that-no converting a manual gear box to power.
OK so you have for whatever reason a PS gearbox with the same shaft size as a manual, I think the easiest solution is to get a new manual shaft and call it good. My old manual intermidiate shaft is 34 1/2" long, does that sound like it would work? what was the length of you old one?

both new and old shaft are 34 1/2 in. long. I guess I need to see if the guy I bought this shaft from will swap with me.
