Any suggestions on a set of stock height , no lift CJ5 shocks (1974)? Vehicle ways about 2800lbs, and, IS used off road. My feeling is gas will be too stiff. BDS does not make a stock height shock ....

I looked at autozone.com and found many options. Gas shocks still have oil in them. The pressurized gas is there to keep the oil from foaming as much. It's the valving that determines how stiff the shock will be.

Agree but would need to fine a low pressure shock, so I was going to stick to a twin tube, hydraulic-but, would be open to any input.

Gas-Charged or Pressurized:
Using gas to pressurize the fluid column inside the shock body inhibits cavitation, which is the foaming of the shock fluid that occurs near the piston as it passes through the fluid. Because air flows through the valves quicker than fluid, the foam reduces the damping effect of the shock. In a gas shock the pressurized gas is separated from the fluid and the gas is contained at a pressure which prevents the release of air from the shock oil solution, regardless of how much vacuum develops behind the piston as it moves through the oil. Gas shocks can either be of a high- or low- pressure design. High-pressure gas shocks are best suited for activities such as racing in which the shock undergoes continuous rapid compression and rebound. Low-pressure gas shocks are better on the trail.

Can't go wrong with Bilstein's. I have RS9000's on my CJ. But I had to look them up by length. A CJ5 will always ride like a buckboard, so if you want a softer ride, you'll have remove a leaf.

I am quite fond of Skyjacker although I have no good reason for it.

Shocks are a device with no documentation, no scale. there is no logig why one is better than another. There is no measurement of heat dissipation or dampening per inch per second or anything else. All I can suggest is you get the proper length and that has very little to do with "stock". Measure the center to center of the shock mounts and see how much travel you have to the bump stop and go from there.

this may help.

Thank you both! Have a "line" on sky jackers-cking that out. Never thought of Bilsteins-they are "top notch" for sure-will ck that out!!!

I have some middle of the road KYBs (I think they were ~ $30 ea. @ rockauto) and they do decent enough but I've never had a different set on my CJ to compare.

Skyjackers are notorious for being valved a little too heavy for lightweight Jeeps (yes, even the ones sold for Jeeps.) You want something closer to a "car" valved shock for a stocker, IMHO. They will ride somewhat better esp. if you have lighter springs.
