Current Setup 1985 Jeep CJ-258, 6cyl -T-5 5spd 273 gears.
I am going to order a 2.5 inch lift kit and replace my stock worn out shackles with a set of Currie Greaseable Shackles. My total lift is going to be 3.25 inches with lift kit and shackles combined. I am running 31X10.5 tires. Will I need to replace the pitman arm and brakelines. Should I just replace my old worn out shackles with a set of new stock CJ shackles or is it better to go with the greaseable shackles. I would like to avoid a pitman arm swap, Transfer Case drop and brakeline change. My jeep is going to be used mostly on pavement and a bit of offroading. I will be sticking with 31 inch tires. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

you should be fine with your old pitman arm, but if i were to stay with 31" tires, i would get the NON-lift version of the greasable shackles. 3.25" of lift is a bit much for those small tires, IMO.

And your castor will thank you for that... Your brake lines and pitman arm should be OK - (TY MYLittle :) )

Check the picture of my CJ. I recently dropped tire size to 31", and run a 2.5" spring lift only. Any more and It would look pretty funny and be of no use. Aside from that, I hate shackle lifts!

Brian you and I are on the same page except my shackles will be 1/2 inch and so 3 inches total but they say nothing extra should be required with a 3 inch lift but I was gona go 33x1250x15 tires later on so................we shall see how It goes.

i have a 2.5" lift and a tad bit longer shackles with 31s. i think the tires look to small.

Hi Dave, I had a look at the shackles on your jeep, I see that they look like the greaseable type. What brand are they and they are a stock lift height. I love the paint color on your jeep, my 79 CJ7 was very similar and turned a lot of heads, especially the ladies. lol

Thanks Petescj for passing along a photo of your CJ7 , this helps a lot. :-) Are those the stock shackles you have on your jeep?

No. They are aftermarket shackles. They add 1/2 in. The springs sagged a little though so its pretty fair to say its 2 1/2 in. overall.

I used Currie stock length HD greasable shackles. As far as color goes, I wanted something diferent, so I got the code from an antique GM color book, and had PPG mix the paint for me. It's 1956 Chevrolet, aqua.

Here's 2 shots of the 31's on 2.5" of lift.

This one is when it had oversize 32's

Between mine and CW's you should get a pretty good comparison. See the difference he has between the fender and wheels? Flip back and forth a few times. I think mine will need some fender trimming when I flex it out.
Hopefully :D

here is mine

Petecj, do you have any tire rub with your 33's with your current setup? Your set up with my 31's should work well for me. Thanks for your help.

Hi Dalefan88, your jeep has a nice stance with your lift. Is that a half inch shackle lift you have also?

My 79 CJ7 was a tad bit darker. It looked awesome with

You cannot link to images on your personal computer - they have to be linked to sites on the net, our gallery or attached to a post... :)

Under full compression yes. My way of fixing that is a little different then some others. Alot of guys say add a 1 in. body lift , I myself dont care for the look of a body lift. A 1in. isnt that noticible but I just dont care for it. Id rather trim sheetmetal and use Tj flares.

I run a 10 in. wide rim so my tires stick out a bit futher. The Tj flares provide better coverage and open up the wheelwells substantially. They are more squared off than the rounded Cj flares but it doesnt bother me. I'll be showing this in the $600 Salvage CJ7 thread when the weather warms up here.

Yours will look fine with the set up Im running with 31s. I have a pic somewhere with 32s on it. I'll find it when I get home and post it up.

I don't think that CJ looks that bad with the 31's even though everyone says you gotta go 33's with a 3 inch lift but my 331 gears make that a question mark...:) She looks d_ _ _ good to me...
