I work in a cleanroom. Our badges have an RFID chip in them. To get in, we wave our badge near the reader, then type in our PIN, and open the door. Sounds simple, right?
A few minutes ago, I was getting suited up to go into the cleanroom. Near me is a guy standing at one of the doors and trying to get in. He has his badge in his hand, waves it by the reader, and then starts typing his PIN. He hasn't removed the badge from his hand though. So he gets about half way through his PIN when the badge gets close enough to the reader for the lock to reset and clear out what he's already typed in. I can hear the beep of the lock resetting, so I know he either heard it too or saw the red light flash. So he tries it again... Swipes, starts typing, his badge is still in his hand and happens to get close enough again to reset the lock. He tried this about five times!
Then he got frustrated and it looked like he thought that the keypad was broken, so he moved to another door and did the whole thing over again. This time he only went through the process about three times before finally getting in!
It reminds me of that Far Side comic where the kid is pushing on the door that says "Pull" and the sign above the door says "School for the Gifted".
