Hey All!
So had an eventful Weekend, Planned to play on the Rubicon a little this last weekend, but plans do have a way of changing from one molment to the next...
Took off from Sacramento, CA after work Friday night... We just had built my Uncle a new Custom roof rack for his CJ, and he had it LOADED up...
Little top heavy... Re figured the load now... Kinda hard to see, but it's about 4' tall load...
We got all the way past Placerville, almost to Fresh Pond Trading post store, and my tranny shaft started vibrating like crazy, then BOOM Driveline broke free from U Joint failure on Hyw 50 doing 60 - 65 mph.
Beat a hole in my under seat box, ripped fuel line in two (to my rear tank) and the slip yoke on the rear drive shaft was toast...
I was a little busy to get carnage photos together, but I did get two for you all (though kinda crappy) from while on my way to a Cool Shop (more to come about that)
So It's 6:30 PM Friday Night... I pull the shaft out, tie my fuel line in knots to stop my full tank from emptying all on the side of the freeway, hook a chain to Uncle's CJ and he tows me off the next exit to the old Ranger Station parking lot there.
Get on my Iphone and start looking for a shop in Placerville... Finally Get a hold of this place:
(notice there is now a sticker on front Bumper! ) The owner, Ben, has got to be the nicest guy I have ever met... He closed @ 6 that day, was in the shop getting his rig ready to take people across the Rubicon the next morning, and... He answered the phone!
After some discussion, we thought we had a replacement slip-yoke in his shop. 16 spline by approx 7" long... However, the shaft diameter was off when I got down to the shop... I'm like" I got 5 Adults, 5 Kids & 2 Dogs sitting in a parking lot waiting for camping... Please tell me you can help..." Instead of saying " sorry Dude, can't help you" like he very well could have, he say's " I'll try something, but no guarentee's and it will ruin the new parts you're buying" I say Do it!
He pounds a new U-Joint in by carnage ridden yoke, and tac welds the cap to fill a gap on the beat up end, slowly so not too much heat, and get's her all done. around $100.00 for 2 new u joints, a couple sets of u bolts, and about 1 to 1-1/2 Hr's of tinkering to get it as good as possible for me... I told him to throw another hundred on it, which he refused.
But I'll square up with him later...
Anyways, get back, slap it in, rig up the leaky lines better, and run off spare under seat tank. She drove fine all the way up to Ice house Rd, Airport Flat camp ground...
(more coming... @ work and there's a delivery to handle... )
