Folks,
I just purchased a 80 CJ5 and have a couple of months to get it ready for 4 months on a ranch guiding deer hunters for Archery. The CJ been gone through mechanically and I am good on that note. Looking for ideas on adding storage , fuel, tools, hitch hauler etc. I would like to mount a jerry can tool storage can up on the front driver side fender or running board. Any one out there with thoughts on these types of mods ?

Robert at thedirtworx.com makes a replacement bumper with a swing-out spare tire carrier that has room for two jerry cans and a hi-lift jack. Stored in the rear, the cans and spare aren't snagging on brush as you drive by. The bumper also has a tube for a 2" receiver.

You can buy a basket that mounts onto a 2" receiver (front or rear) for $50-80 dollars. I got one at https://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/Main.aspx?

I guess you won't need it if you are guiding bowhunters, but the Perfect Rack from Overhead Gun Rack is built specifically for Jeeps and is the best thing I have found so far for transporting a rifle in a hunting jeep.

If you are doing all the lifting yourself and loading deer into the back of the jeep, I have found it useful to mount a small pulley to the center of the roll bar. It really helped with wrestling deer up into the back of the jeep.

Several of my hunting buddies welded little frames to the front bumper of their jeeps big enough to secure a medium sized cooler, for taking lunches, beverages, etc out into the field. This really frees up a lot of space inside the jeep, and keeps the cooler from bouncing all over the place.

Hey great ideas. The jeep will be mostly for moving hunters around tree stands, I'll let my dad with the 3/4 ton diesel do the heavy loading work. Do the overhead racks hold a reasonable amount of weight, say 100 lbs worth of tree stands. What about a winch how big and wear do I put it. In the front seems to be the most popular, but I usually like to back out of trouble. I kind of like the receiver hitch winch mounts and I ordered a front receiver tube, but wonder what the weight would be like moving a winch around on a plate.

The rack I was referring to is a rifle rack that mounts inside between the windshield and the roll bar. The overhead rack you are referring to is a Safari-style Rack. A number of manufacturers make them. The one by Garvin looked the best to me: Garvin Wilderness Racks Yes, those will support a man walking around on them.

I think an 8000 lb. winch would do anything you need for recovering a stuck jeep CJ7 . Most folks put them on the front. I have seen them mounted to a removable bracket that will fit into a front or rear receiver hitch; you just have to pre-wire your power to both the front and back of the jeep in advance. Depending on how heavy your winch is, that might or might not be a smart option.
