'79 CJ5, 258 I6, T150 w/Dana20, Dana30 front and AMC20 rear. My first Jeep! I'm looking forward to doing some minor upgrades and restoration while enjoying the ride.
I think my googling skills are shot, I can't find what I'm looking for out there.

Does anyone know of an ignition system I can use for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6 that has individual coils for each cylinder?

Before you tell me that's just for high revving racing stuff, let me assure you that I understand all that but there's another reason for using such a system. With a coil for each cylinder I could lose one coil and still make it home on the other five.

Short answer no. This something that's used on newer motors with fuel injection with coil packs for each cylinder.

Are you having issues with your canister coil?

In my experience the the ignition coils is very reliable and not prone to failure unless you have other issues. All the coil on plug ignitions I've seen are computer controlled and would require EFI and probably a lot of other sensors. I do know that the later model 4.0s went distributor-less, but I'm not sure if they ever used a COP design or if it could be retrofitted to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

Thanks guys. No trouble with my current coil and I know they very rarely go out, I just thought of this as part of the fun factor and it really does have that "just in case" safety catch if a coil should ever go out. It would just look cool.

Don't 'fix', what ain't broke.........

A lot less expensive and time consuming just to carry an extra stock coil with you.

Yeah but it's not as cool as having individual coils.

You can have the coolness, I'll take the extra money and time saved for buying and drinking beer. Heck, I would still have money left over for a fuel injection kit.

I like the fun-factor ;-)

Cheers!
