Newest is my '78 CJ5. It has a 304, 4 speed NP 435 with a Dana 20.

My daily driver is a 2012 Ram 1500 RCSB R/T.

I'm in the process of building a 1968 SWB C10. it has a built BBC, turbo 400 and 3:73's.
Hey folks,
I have the following items in my Summit cart: MSD 8414 Cap-a-dapter, MSD 8202 Blaster 2 coil and a set of MSD 5551 Streetfire plug wires. My CJ5 is a 1978 with the AMC 304 . It’s got headers and a mild cam. Would these parts make a noticeable improvement? Is there something I’m missing?

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Since you have them you might as well do the install anyway. To upgrade your ignition with a performance cap you are looking to get the sparks that fly around inside the distributor as far away from the distributor base as you can. Having brass contacts on the cap helps also. MSD is well known for making top notch stuff. MSD wires are pretty much the best you can get.

I run the MSD ign and coil via OEM cap and rotor.
Much improvement, and since I still have to deal with SMOG testing every 2 yrs(FUK-PRK)I have found my emissions to be lower.
Tip-hard wire a GND from the MSD box to reduce RFI to you radio and if you have such your CB or 'HAM' radio.

Agree with that 100 percent. Made my engine great with MSD system.

LG,

Are you referring to the ignition module (box) that's mounted to the driver's inner fender? I think it is a MotorCraft product.

Danny

Is the MSD 6201 Ignition Controller the box LG is referring to? Is that something that I would need to buy along with other pieces to get the most from the upgrade? I’m sure it’s obvious that I am not up to speed on ignition components.

Thanks,
Danny

No not the OEM ign control.-The MSD box.

Thanks LG! You always come through! I ordered the whole MSD setup. Cap a dapt, coil, wires and ignition box. I’m not having any ignition issues, but I thought the upgrade may pay off in the performance area. Maybe even get a little better MPG. Really, it’s just another excuse to tinker with the CJ.

Thanks again!

Danny

Mine just runs so much smoother and stronger with it Was worth the cost & effort.

That’s what I wanted to hear! I pulled the plugs. They’re all nice and clean, no fouling. Is there a plug that you’d recommend? I like NGK’s. It has Autolites now.

I just use the OEM champion plug with wider gap. Seems to work well for me

Thanks! I really appreciate your input! The folks on the forum are always so helpful and willing to share their advice and experience.

For plugs, I run std. Auto-lite 985 set at .045 gap.

Just curious if any of you are using the newer MSD digital 6AL (part #6425) and if so have you had any issues with them? There are quite a few negative reviews on Amazon for this ignition module. For the most part there are several that said this newer box has failed shortly after installation and left them stranded while the older analog module ran long term with no issues.

Don't remember part # but is 6 AL digital. None. Thinking maybe 3 years now

There was the 6AL analog which was part #6420 and the newer 6AL digital module part #6425 which according to the website was a "recent" upgrade. I'm assuming you have the older analog module.
