Vehicle(s)
ford f150 crew cab 4x4, jeep cj7 just bought to restore, gm 4 cyl 4 speed trans hard top
I have a 1982 CJ7 a former national park service vehicle and will chronicle the restoration in this thread. The CJ7 is forrest green with a white fiberglass hardtop. It currently sits with 120350 miles on the Iron Duke 4 cyl with a 4 on the floor. Both the front and rear axles have been rebuilt, it also has a new water pump and a new radiator. Has a decent amount of rust on the body but the frame looks to be in pretty good shape.

Will post pictures when I snap a few of them.

Now the first issue, I am having difficulties on removing the brake rotor. I have removed the caliper, the warn locking hub and the inner locking assembly. I have used a rubber mallet and tried to break it free if it were rusted together. I also soaked the rotor with wd-40 and PB blaster. Any ideas or tips are appreciated.

i have a problem with my sons CJ5 rebuild. the serial number we can find is only 6 digits. the maryland mva says their book nada has ten digits. try as we can we can olny find 6 digits. any thoughts gang

Where are you looking? On my '82 you could find the vin on the driver side windshield frame. There is a plate that holds it to the body tub allowing it to stay fixed with the windshield down. If your sons is around the same year it should be there.

Pete, the problem is that the body tub is fiberglass. Also it's a 1960 CJ5 . I will check the windshield frame when I get off work.

for those of you who are confused, i as igor started the thread. my son kevin and i got 2 jeeps bout a week apart. dad me got a 1982 CJ7 and son kevin got a 1960 CJ5 . sorry for any confusion. evin is the more computer literate thanm the old geezer, me

well i got the front rotoras off and they are being turned as we speak. i am using new calipers pads lines etc. i found a camera so i am going to take photos and get my son kevin to post them , then on to the back brakes which i am told by the prev owner are in good shape hope springs eternal

well got the rotors back so i started with taking off the brake line from the brfake to the frame, well i broke it inside the frame so i guess ill have to replace the next section as well. anyone know where to find a diagram of the brake system so ill know where to look for the next junction. i might as well do the other side as well.
any info would be helpful i do slog on

well after a slow start, and being laid off from my part time i have got the front brake lines off from the CJ7 .
all new brake lines are inbound, tro be used as needed, calibers and pads are inbound as well.
i put a new tire on the right rear so i hav e decent rubber all 4 and a good spare.
once the brakes are put it whenm we will try to wind up the gum bands and start it. new radiator new water pump, front and rear diffs have been rebuiilt. once any problems with the starting and running of the engine are taken care of, and the erar brakes are confirmed up to snuff then the body will be addressed.
the plan is to replace the front floor boards first, taking care to use por 15 on the under side aand the top side of the remaining metal and the new stuff. the rear floor area in front of the rear seat needs addressed also. again p[or 15 will be used on the new and the reamining metal. the erar cargo area is ok so that will be sanded and por 15 put down. acouple of areas on the rear wheel wells need some metal so that will be done.
once the floor is finished i plan on using herculin to cover the floor and trash the carpet. who needs carpet on a jeep anyway. ill get mats front and rfear.
the outside will neew some metal work so i will do that. i am still debating replacing the rocker panels and then putting some diamond plate over that ,or just replac ing the pan el;s. the diamond plate would rtke cre of the slight buldge opnce i rivet the new metal on the rocker panels
prt of the slow start was aquiring things like a good floor jack some more jack stands. and also the real hot weather in late july and august and the rain. we dont hae a garage ,bummer,
so folks thats the plan of attack subject to aquiring funds.
any one see anythiing i forgot. i have taken some photos and im getting my son top put them in the machine sop i cam post them
aany feed back well its gold cause i am realizing jusr how much i have forgotten about such things since the late 50 s anda 60 s

hey gang i am about tready to start the engine when mty son in law, a marine diesal mechanic says that he checked the oil and apparentlyt the prev owner filled the crank case with gas. he thinks it was cause the engine was going to sit for a couple of years and he didnt want it to sieze up. the prev o was in the afgani ountains doionsg the soldier thing for almost two years and the jeep was in virginia.
so i am going to drain the iol and fill it with good oil and change the filter anything else i shoulod be doing

:)If if was sitting for two years its doubtful the the gas would had not evaporated.............
But if your smelling a funky gas like smell that could be gas but the bad news is once that gas has evaporated off it leaves behind all the junk which is like a heavy varnish.............Might have to pull the pan an flush that stuff out...........once your done make sure you prime that oil pump with an electric drill or other fixture
:D:D:D:D

If indeed the engine has been full of something other than oil, I would seriously think about pre-oiling it before actually starting it, to avoid creating any damage. Since, I'd doubt you have the proper adapter to use a drill motor, you can disconnect the coil, pull the spark plugs, squirt a bit of oil in all the cylinders to protect the rings and cylinder walls, then while the plugs are out and there is no compression, spin the engine over with the starter for ten seconds or so. The engine will spin better with the plugs out, you can avoid compression loading on the main bearings and you will allow the oil pump to oil the bearings, before you put them under an actual running load. Also, while you are doing this, you should see a low pressure indication on your oil pressure gauge.

After you are done, reassemble the motor and see if it fires off and runs, while keeping a super close eye on your gauge for adequate oil pressure, once it's going. And, as Tarry99 said above, you may have some contamination inside the block, so I'd plan on changing the oil/filter after you have run it for a couple of hours.

Good luck!:)
