I'm looking for ways to improve the steering on my 47 CJ2a , meaning easier turning and better control. I would also very much like to keep my original steering column and wheel. I have heard and read bits and pieces about different setups, manual and power. I believe I even saw something about a rack and pinion system that can be adapted. What did you do?

Are ALL of your steering components in good condition? So many parts in that system that a little wear here and a little wear there makes for lousy steering, It starts at the Ross gear box...pitman arm and its ball end....drag link and its 2 ball cups...bellcrank with its ball end and pivot bushing...the tie rod ball joints....the knuckles and their king pin bearings....and lastly your wheel bearings.
IF all of those items and whatever I missed are in good serviceable condition AND you have stockish sized tires your CJ will steer very easily.
How do I know this...my 3b with its Ross and closed knuckle system was more than a workout to drive and I went thru every moving part on it and found issues with every part I listed above, after rebuilding everything it now steers almost effortlessly and the death wobble above 45mph is gone. :D
