I think i hijacked another thread to ask this question once.

Anyway, i wanna move my rear axle back a few inches, but the diff will hit the tank, ( 1986 CJ7 ) ..

i saw Genright has a tank but its $1,000 !!! for a gas tank

i have the factory 20 gallon right now, i want to keep the fuel tank under the jeep ( i have 2 kids), are there any options??

i dont think a factory 15 gallon will give me the clearance either, but not sure

Does anyone else make a tank?

The 15 gal. tank will hit also. I've thought of moving the rear also but like
you all I could find was the genright. I did read a thread somewhere about
a guy that made a skid plate mold of sorts and kept heating a polly tank
till he pressed it in to fit . Kinda looked like the genright shape when he
was done.

i was afraid there wasnt many options, i guess thats why Genright can jam everyone for a G, instead of a reasonable price.

My best advice would be to start thinking far-outside the box...

They make a whole lot of different size / shape tanks for all types of vehicles...

You could (not sure with your year) put a tank under your drivers and passenger seats (the old style CJ tanks) with some fabrication / modification...

Jeep CJ CJ5 CJ6 New Steel Gas Fuel Tank 15 Gallon 55-67 | eBay

Something like that. One on each side would get you 30 gal...

Or keep looking for what would work for you... I have seen somewhere a very customized rear tub that incorporated the fuel tank, and rear seat together...

You may not be even open to those options due to the "in the vehicle" fuel tank idea...

But I always hate to think you're only allowed 1 option... but who knows by the end the 1k might be cheaper, though i doubt it...

Keep thinking it through and I'm sure a light-bulb will appear over your head one night like in the cartoons.

I read an article where some one recessed a RCI fuel cell into the back f a CJ. It dropped in from the top and only about an inch or two stuck up above the floor. or find a freind that can fab alluminum and have a custom one made. Then you would have to make your own skid plate/mount.

How are your welding and fabrication skills?

The gas tank is held in place by 2 stamped steel cross members. If you move the axle back it will hit the front cross member. That will have to be removed. Now you don't have much room between the axle in it's new location and the rear bumper. The rear cross member is at the rear bumper.
You can move the rear axle back 6 inches before the curvature of the frame would decrease your travel. If you move your axle back 6 inches you could extend the frame 6 inches. This would allow room for a OEM tank if you reinstall some type of cross members in front of and behind the tank. This will not decrease you departure angle since you are moving the axle too. It may look odd with the rear bumper sticking out past the body. The fuel filler would then be at the rear of the body.

Yes it's a lot of work but you probably work hard for that $1000 too. If you can weld frame extensions that's the route I would go.
