I have a 77' CJ7 with what I believe to be the original AMC 304 v8. This matches what my vin# says should be in there according to the Chiltons repair book I have . On the very next page of the Chiltons, it says the AMC 304 was only stuck in the CJ5 and 6. Was the AMC 304 originally stuck in the CJ7 or is this just a typo?

If your 7th digit in the vin is an "H" then it came with the AMC 304 . I'd trust the factory vin and not the Chiltons book. I've given up on Chiltons and prefer to go with a Haynes manual or better yet a FSM or TSM if I can find them

I have a D listed for my Transmission . Its not on the decoder for my 1980 CJ7 .
Any ideas what that means?
It has an automatic in it.
