80 CJ7, 304 w/Edlebrock carb, Dana 300 TC, SR4 transmission, 4" spring lift up front, shackle lift on the rear. Hooker headers and Flowmaster exhaust. Hard top. Full cage. My new project.
The rear shackles are 6 1/2 inches from the center of the spring eye and hanger bolts. The rear springs are almost flat with 3/4 tank of gas in it. The front springs have a much shorter shackle and a pronounced bow. I'm pretty sure it is. I just want a sanity check. I'm getting ready to put an NP435 in along with a couple other fixes. I'm wondering if I should add springs to the list. Especially since I'm following the steering and suspension sticky. And am trying to get ready for the Jeep CJ trail ride.

I say yes, add springs to your list. A stock shackle is 3 inches eye to eye. Every inch longer adds half an inch of lift since you are only lifting one end of the spring. A shackle lift isn't as good as spring lift. In the front a shackle lift can be downright dangerous because more forces are experienced. A front shackle lift can also mess up the caster.

This shackle also looks bent

:agree: ditch those shackles.

X3 on the shackles. Move springs up on the list ;)

Thank you all for the input. Shackles and springs are going to be ordered so I can put them in when I do the drive train swaps in a couple weeks. And yes Busadave, both shackles are bent at the spring eye. Looks like over tightened bolts. Could be what's giving me that weird feel at 45-50 mph?

They are aftermarket shackles. At 6 1/2" bolt to bolt there are giving you about 1 3/4" of lift over stock. That's getting close to the limit of safe shackles. They look beefy but can't say for sure. The bolts are definitely too tight and are pinching the bushings.
But they have nothing to do with your flattened springs, those are just shot. Had those shackles not been there you'd be rubbing by now. Replace both but if your going to keep using heavy duty shackles limit them to 5" which will still give you an inch of lift. But if you can afford the taller springs, get your lift from them instead.

Thanks everybody. I expected to have to do this. Just liked having a sanity check. Already ordered taller springs and shorter heavy duty shackles.:chug:
