Working on an '85 CJ7 . Power steering
I have replaced the original box with an '85 J20 power steering box (and a better mount).
I have an OMIX HD steering shaft, the type with U joints at each end, and no bell coupler.
The J20 box has a smaller diameter input shaft and spline setup than the HD shaft does (original CJ size). I understand that with the original shaft you can change the bell connector to a smaller, manual steering end that will mate with the J20 box.
Is there any way that the new HD shaft can be connected to the J20 box, or I am going to have to go backward to an original shaft?
I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks,
Greg

You just need a shaft for a CJ with manual steering. I don't know if you can just buy and replace the lower coupling or if you have to buy a whole new shaft.

I did this swap on my jeep. I can't remember which heavy duty shaft I bought. But it was for a manual steering box that was on my jeep at the time. I call the manufacturer and told them what I wanted to do before buying the J20 gear. They sold me what I needed to convert. Heck, I can't even remember what it was. I believe just the bell.

Did you verify if the "new" parts were any different from what you had? The input diameter and spline count on a CJ manual box is the same as the J20 (and J10/Waggy boxes).

Edit: not that it really matters, I was just curious. The important thing is he can hopefully call them and get what he needs w/out changing the whole shaft.

At the time, I wasn't in a position to install it myself. So I didn't pay that much attention. Just ordered the part(s) and had it dropped off at the guy's place who installed it for me. It seems like it was just the bell size. Morris 4x4 sells a kit for both the manual and power steering shaft end. They look identical. So I'm thinking it's just a size difference.

Right, the input size is different between the CJ manual and CJ power steering boxes. The FSJ power steering boxes have the same size input as a CJ manual steering box. So a CJ manual steering shaft will work on a CJ with a FSJ power steering box. If you had manual steering on your CJ, then your steering shaft would have fit right on the FSJ power box. If they sent you a power steering coupler for a CJ, then it would not fit a FSJ box.
