I apologize for adding an off topic post, but I know of no other way to get this information to as many folks as possible as quickly as possible.
We have reached the point here that paid memberships are going to be a necessity. 15 years ago when CJ started this site, it was running on his personal server. He worked the coding to allow everything to play together. Fairly quickly he had to move to an offsite server, and that is currently running north of 1500 bucks a year, out of his own pocket.……. We have 22,633 members (granted, many are not active) of one of the best CJ sites around. I don’t know about you, but I don’t go thru life expecting anything to be free. Several months ago CJ posted a thread about needing help paying the server bills – recent medical issues have tied up discretionary funds, as well as general funds, and he will not be able to pay the server bill going forward. For anyone not interested in doing the math themselves, 15 years of server bills would be at least in the neighborhood of $20,000. I have been trying to get him to implement payed memberships, but he’s resisting. Says he doesn’t want to force folks to pay to be here – my argument is if we don’t pay our own way, there won’t be a there to be here at.
A $25 a year membership is a cheap price for the information available here. When your Jeep gets sick, and you aren’t sure what exactly is going on, you have two options: Ask someone who knows (and most of them are here) or take it to a shop that at best sees a couple a year or worse has never seen one till you show up. One issue that you have diagnosed here is worth WAY more than 25 bucks. You can sit at home and have the most knowledgeable CJ folks I know of dump information in your lap – all you have to do is ask. One nice dinner out. 2 12 packs of cheap beer. 3 movie tickets. Heck, I’d rather hang out here for entertainment than go to the movies……..
CJ posted his requests in the “Site Information” forum – most folks have never been there. My belief is it’s not that most don’t want to help, they just aren’t aware there is a problem. Free is always good, but I think the time has come for us to step up and pull our own weight. Yes, the site has functionality issues…… It’s not perfect. But it’s time for CJ to be able to work the software end and not have to worry about where the money is going to come from. Or worse, pull the plug.
