Hey all,

I've got a '82 CJ in almost stock condition. Its been missing the "AMC Jeep" emblem in the center of the steering wheel. I think its the original steering wheel but I've seen different versions on 1982 CJ's. I've been looking forever for an original replacement, they are very hard to find even in bad shape. I FINALLY bought one on Craigslists but the "hub" is different than my "Hub". My steering wheel HUB is in much better shape and i would rather keep it.

Does anyone know if you can safely remove only the emblem from the steering wheel? I bought the steering wheel and HUB for $10 on craigslist, guy said it came from a 1983 CJ. I don't want to destroy the HUB if possible to get the emblem

thanks!

Very hard to do, since it was printed on the back and glued in, will destroy one or the other, unless you can find a solvent to remove glue without melting emblem. Can not remember if it was acetone, nail polish remover, paint thinner or what since it was long ago I did one.
Contact a body repair shop or wait for someone to chime in with a answer. Same manufacturing style as the AMC badge on the back of tub.

Your wheel is a sport wheel (not soft feel) w/base horn button, Craig`s list buy is base/base, and a nice buy for $10.

Even though mine's a '79......let me take & post a pic of my stock wheel. If it matches yours or fits your needs, you can have it. I put a smaller one on years ago, and have no plans to swap back. I'll get the pics up tomorrow.

Hey, thanks for the response and the information! Where's the "AMC badge on the back of the tub"? This is my first CJ and i really love it, want to keep it as stock as possible. I was wondering about the different steering wheel types, i searched around the internet and didn't find much info. I'm going to hold off doing anything until i get some more opinions on what/how to do. thanks again!

Would love to see it, thanks for the offer! My bro in law has a CJ with a crappy steering wheel, i would love to restore the craigslist one and give it to him. He just got back from another tour of duty and loves his jeep. Would be a great present.

Here's the stock wheel from my '78 (sorry for the year-error above). Not sure if it meets your needs, but you're welcome to it if you want it.

Not bad $, but for cars.
I was looking for a leather wheel (on e-bay) for my Laredo #1, and found picture #2, said dang mines better, then I found #3 and thought mines good enough $. Almost as crazy as General Ikes $750.000 MB in/from Scotland or was that 450k either way crazy $.
Still haven`t found a good $ wheel (or someone to wrap) so will use one of my others until.

Hey thanks for the offer, it looks like a good steering wheel. I'm going to try to get the emblem off and fix my steering wheel. Would rather keep the original one. Thanks again for the offer!

I removed the emblem at the expense of the HUB, wasn't in good shape anyway. I drilled out around the center and used a dremel to remove most of the remaining plastic. I was concerned about shaving off too much underneath but the bottom of the emblem is metal. Not too hard to do.

These are not correct, but don't look bad, and they're cheap.

They are not metal backed. Just soft plastic.

I ordered just to see if they would work and they do.

Again, not correct. Nowhere near it, but something that will work for something like my hunting Jeep, where I want to to be AMCish but it doesn't have to be 100% correct since it's in the mud anyway.
