Jeep Pickup
Jeep's been teasing about a pick up truck for a while now, but will it ever really happen? And will anyone buy it?
Jeep showed the Gladiator concept, the JT concept, the Nukizer show vehicle, the J8 military vehicle, and now the Jeep Independence. All of which could point towards a Jeep pickup truck.
With Fiat's collaboration Jeep is now more open to world markets, and most world markets seem more hungry for a small pickup instead of a 2 or 4-door Wrangler, so on one hand it makes sense to build a rugged Jeep pickup with a J8 frame and rear leafs and front coils to haul heavy loads across foreign countries.
At the same time rumor mills claim GM, Ford and Dodge/Ram are all dropping their small pickup lines for lack of sales in the US, but keeping some or all for foreign markets.
Toyota on the other hand is having great success with their Tacoma small pick up here and abroad.
We would expect it to cost at least a million dollars to integrate a Jeep pickup into productions, even while using currently used Wrangler infrastructure.
Of course a Jeep pickup truck would sell in the US, but would it really out sell a Tacoma? or would it only be a novelty to Jeep guys looking for a small truck? And can global sales support a vehicle that may only get niche sales in the US? Lets face it, most Americans buy 4-door trucks to haul more people, and Jeep already offers a 4-door called the Wrangler Unlimited.
This new Independence concept which claims to be a kit to transform your 4-door JK into a 2-door pickup seems odd to me. Is someone saying that they aren't going to offer a truck but here try this on for size? Or is it still another stall tactic until they actually build a truck? Either way I see a small market of buyers cutting up a JK to make it into a truck.
Michael Manley and Sergio Marchionne are the two guys in charge at Jeep and Chrysler/Fiat and they both probably have a hard time sleep at night trying to decide just this question. (Well maybe not Mr. Marchionne, as rumor has it he doesn't sleep, just works around the clock)
My advice?
forget about the Mopar kit
build the truck
make sure it has the J8 frame and suspension so we can haul heavy loads.
I'd rather see the separate bed and cab of the Gladiator than the Scrambler-esque JT, but I'm sure that increases costs all around
And while we're at it, give us a little, robust, Willy's Jeep size mini-wrangler for efficient commuting and 4-wheeling. Hopefully some Fiat power train could motivate such a vehicle without making it lame off road.
and one last thing, the Jeep J7 Stripper was awesome. too bad that one died on the vine.
