Low 3 digit Vin! One of the very first m38a1s!
A few months ago I finally found & bought an M416 trailer. My joy was short lived when I discovered the interior dimensions were not 4’x6’ feet as I always believed.
The primary purpose for this trailer was camping / off road adventures but also to use it as a utility trailer allowing me to haul an occasisonal sheet of plywood etc..
After learning the size discrepency I decided to build one. I copied the design of the military trailer but used 16 ga steel for the body & 1/8” thick tube for the frame. The tongue is 1/4” 2x3” channel.
Both welded & aircraft rivets. The bed, front wall & inside tailgate are 1/8” diamond plate.
The bed inside is 48 1/2” wide by 72 1/2” long. With the tailgate down, it is just over 8’ long. Perfect for hauling anything I want!
The M416 weighs 602lbs and mine weighs in at exactly 700lbs. Not bad considering how much stronger it is.
The top-rails are 1”x1”x 1/8” square tube because I didn’t have any way to form the round edge.
The tongue has a 2” receiver tube with accommodates either a 2” ball coupler or a lunette ring for a pintle hook.
Axle is rated at 3500lbs, hubs at 5,000lbs with a 5 on 5.5” bolt pattern to match my Jeeps. The hitch is 5,000 and 15,000 lb capacity.
All the lighting is LED.
I’m extremely pleased with the way it turned out & may go into production making more. Next time I’ll try square fenders.

Nice trailer Jeff,

Im working on a expedition trailer build, still working on the rack so I can mount my roof top tent but she’s got pressurized water, 2000w inverter/20amp solor charger and a 200ah battery.

Iv nevery pulled a trailer off-road but my torsion axle really make it capable! Pulled her all over Ouray with little hassles.

Real easy to get to your stuff with those top openings like that

Once I get the rack welded the rooftop unit has a annex room that has a zippered opening that will allow access to the passenger side of the trailer it’s going to be nice waking up and walking down a ladder and plugging in the coffee maker and still be in my skibby’s 😂 and not offend the wildlife..

I look forward to seeing pictures of the whole thing set up. I've see a couple of them on the newer jeeps with that set up and one on a trailer

Finally got the rack together and mounted and the table set up.

Tomorrow I get my RTT!!

Once I get my 79 roadworthy I'll be cleaning this up to tow behind it. 194? M-100. Gotta have it ready by the 1st camping trip of the season. No roof top tent for mine cause the pooch sleeps in with us. Mainly just a hauler this season then adding solar panels next year.

Nice find ! With some work you will have a good hauler for your gear.

I plan on building one like this but with a pintle hook up and offroad tires:

The company sells all the parts including just the body and they make a M416 style. These are fiberglass bodies and are re-enforced for roof top type camping if you like.

I am curious...

those of you that are making them from scratch, where do you get your parts?

trailer section at northern?

how do you know what to get to ensure you have enough UMPH to carry all your stuff?

great looking trailers by the way... wish i had those kinds of skills

There are several trailer parts suppliers near me but I found that prices and selection were MUCH better online. Besides that, I was able to specify the bolt pattern I wanted so my trailer hubs matched my Jeep wheels.
As for “uumph” the military trailers were only rated for 500lbs payload. Everything on mine is much stronger. With a 3500lb axle & springs, I can haul anything I want... within reason.

What does it look like right now? I am guessing that you pushed through with rebuilding the trailer.

Well unfortunately it looks about the same. I got as far as new lights and a wiring harness and that was it. I just took the '79 to the shop for some electrical work and I'm planning on starting work on the trailer beginning of May.

I purchased a morris mule trailer to camp out of. It's pretty small, basically a 3x5 box with 2 different level racks. You can only open the doors with the taller rack. I love it, this past year I bought a bunch of stuff to go solar, but have yet to hook it up yet. He unfortunately has stopped building them earlier this year.20171021_112442_resized.jpg20180525_191900 [800x600].jpg

This trailer might be small but it is useful. It seems like you guys have fun using it on this adventure.
