1984 CJ-7 Laredo (no modifications)
(straight -6) 258. Engine is original.
no major changes except tune up stuff
Manual - 5 speed (4x4)
misc information
1) new battery; new air fiter; breather; PCV Valve; fuel filter and hose around the fuel filter
2) fuel filter is in the proper position
3) Thinking about doing the Team rush tune up

Friend poured a little fuel down the carburetor. Jeep started right up.
This caburator is not the orginal, but was added in the mid 90s. I am guessing Weber, but will take pictures this weekend to see if you guys know which one it is. I am also guessing float or needle is the cause at this point.

Do I A) buy the kit and take it all a part but confidence is low since not sure what I am doing and how long kits last
B) purchase a new carburetor...start fresh/ last longer, feel a little safer/more reliable (at this time I do not know cost of either)

Lastly (while typing) I could replace the fuel pump. It was replaced back in the 90s as well.
Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated
Thank you in advance,
Happy early Thanksgiving!
PS - Do they make clear fuel hoses? so one can actually see the fuel

Take the hose of the "in" side of the filter. Should be un obstructed from the pump now to the line your holding in your hands....

If you crank the jeep, or start it by pouring into the carb, gas should flow (into a bucket hopefully etc ) and you'll know if pump good or bad.

Did you replace the filter with same type etc?

Was it flowing all fine before any changes?

And you have triple checked you've got the filter on the right way, no kinks in the lines etc?

Those would be where i would start... If you are not getting fuel, chances are pump no good, or clog in the tank maybe?

:chug:

I would agree that is a great starting point make sure the fuel pump is pumping gas first if it is the needle seat maybe stuck closed.

So you aren't getting fuel. I bet it's the fuel pump.
Follow JR's suggestion.

once it starts does it stay running or quit?

if it keeps running then it is not the fuel pump

it sounds like the accelerator pump circuit is bad in the carb, not giving a pump of gas when you step on the pedel.

if it stops like it runs out of gas, disconnect the gas hose and crank the engine, if gas comes out the pump works.

now about rebuilding or a new one. Just how confident do you want to be in this carb? I do you want a warranty or just repaired?

Does the oil smell like gasoline???
If the pump diaphragm is ruptured it will.
if the pump is not supplying fuel, connect a line to the intake of the pump and put that in a bucket of fuel to see if it pumps.
need to look for air leaks all the way back to the tank.

Similar situation in my sons Cherokee Chief this week, came out one day and wouldn't start. It would with gas down the carb, but would not stay running. We replaced the fuel pump with no change, pulled the line off the inlet side of filter and it was bone dry. Jacking it up today to check all the rubber lines between the tank and fuel lines. Had this happen on a '71 Chevelle, yrs ago, and the mainline rubber hose back at the tank was cracked and sucking air, replaced it and all was well. How rusty is your Jeep, the lines on my CJ were pretty bad to the point of disintegrating when bent. Anything like that could cause you to be sucking air instead of fuel from the tank. A thorough inspection of you fuel lines are in order, before dropping the tank and checking the inlet sock... my sending unit was also corroded to the point where the return line was completely disconnected from the sening unit. Worth checking into..

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will be trying them all.
I have a few pictures... I the hose behind the fuel pump had a crack in it. so I replaced that. I pumped the pedal 40-50 times and it still show no signs of gas getting there.

1) my jeep is parked right in front of the hot water tank(flame) so I am afraid of taking a hose off and cranking. since my driveway is straight down... I will probably just turn the water tank completely off while working on it, this holiday weekend.

I need to get the jeep book to see if there are any more rubber fuel hoses behind the fuel pump, all I saw was the long metal one but lost it somewhere in the back of the jeep.

The fuel pump will not pump gas when you pump the gas pedal. Your pedal is connected to the carburetor and allows for more fuel flow but unless you have an electric fuel pump, the pump will not work unless the engine is turning over. Pouring gas down the carb is not the safest thing to do, there is always the chance of a backfire through the carb, but you can test the pump that way as mentioned above.

To check to see if there is a clog between the tank and the pump, you can take the intake line off the pump and blow through it, I use a hard plastic tube that fits into the rubber line to do this. Have someone listen at the tank to see if they here bubbles or air coming into the tank. Sometimes this will even clear out obstructions.

As mentioned above, it sounds like the fuel delivery system prior to getting to the carb. Work backwards from the carb and eliminate things until you find the problem. Keep us informed.

Thank you for all suggestions!
JEEP officially started!!! I replaced the fuel pump and blew bubbles in the tank. Cranked for 20 sec.. nothing .... cranked for 20 more seconds nothing... replaced my ignition coil... cranked for 10 seconds nothing... cranked for 10 more seconds... it started right up!!!!!!!!!!!!

While working on it found a few more things that need replaced so looks like I will have some winter projects.

Thank you again!
