I have seen them mounted everyplace on a CJ. I would suggest putting it on the rear though. On my CJ, I can put one on each side of the spare, as that's the way I designed the rear rack with 5 gal. cans. There are a few different types of mounts also.

Some pictures of your Jeep would be helpful. You say that you can't mount it to your spare tire, but there are a lot of very resourceful folks here have done it. There are also some commercially available spare tire mounts that work well. I made ours by cutting a piece of flat plate and drilling it to match the lugs that held the spare tire on. After that, I used a piece of 2x2 tube welded to this plate, then welded the tank mount on the other end. But like I said, we need pictures to see what your spare tire mount looks like in order to help you. It may not be strong enough to hold the added weight of a gas can.

Why are Metal Jerry Cans not DOT approved? Is there something about the design of them? It would seem to me that metal is preferable to plastic for an application like this.

Agree-But the law is there in the USA.

What kind of Nazi Sheriff's Deputy is going to give you a citation for having a jerrycan on the back of your jeep? Unless you already pissed him off for doing 80 in a school zone, I just dont see it happening.

Probably get one if you got rear ended and one of them popped open or caught on fire. You know, one of those "ace up the sleeve" laws.
