Changing a CJ rollbar to a YJ family style rollbar - JeepForum.com

Kinda of like the idea shouldnt be very hard to find a YJ part out Any thoughts? I would love to have a sound bar for front speakers. And it may seem silly to swap in a YJ roll bar just to get front sound but Hey I am that against paying 60 + bucks for the centra pod or those under the door speaker holders lol Plus I mean 3 point rear seatbelts are nice.

go for it. ive been looking for set for mine but everybody around here wants an arm and a leg for em. plus you can buy aftermarket cage add-ons for em instead of having a whole custom cage built, which for me would be better than spending a fortune on a custom cage that i don't need or can afford.

is 100 reasonable? found one witthout belts for that price

Tell me whats the sense in having a roll cage if its bolted to the window frame? a cage is meant to hold the weight of jeep in a roll to keep you from getting crushed ,

this design of a cage is suicide

Rather trust my life to something on these lines :chug:

I think the stock cage will be sufficient for me.

to each is own but don't depend on it it will fold like a pretzel in a light roll
that design was Chrysler's biggest mistake

this roll was off a 5 ft bank at a low speed driver died jeep rolled 1 1/2 times
take note on how the roll bar is twisted and drivers side windshield frame is crushed
they are not trail rated or safe in any means
life is worth more than saving a few bucks
I rolled a cherokee 9 times with a 6 point cage along with a 5 point harness off a 60+ ft cliff here in Colorado and if I had no cage I would not be here today busted a rib and my shoulder yes I'm a very lucky SOB

I hear what your saying but this is not a wheeling build so for now Id like to stick with a yj or cj roll bar.

I know this is old, but my 2 cents. Some people always seem to tell others that the sport cage is not safe and that they need to spend the $700 and get a real cage. All I say is that remember the people have CJ7 bars, anything they put in there is bonus. Putting a family bar with bolts to windshield is safer than the bar in a cj hands down. So they go from a 0 in safety to a 3 (roll cage being a 10). Anything is safer than a cj bar, and you can get yj bars for fraction of the price. I put a family bar in mine and it works great for my sand/road needs.

I strongly disagree. And if you do some searching I think you'll find many others that do also. The wranglers have a weaker "sport bar" due to it's pinched tubes and bolts. Your not only relying on the shear strength of a 3/8" bolt vs. a 2 1/4"x.120 tube but the pinch in the tubes promote a bend point to fold on. And those useless bars to the windshield are probably just as dangerous because they will fold in towards the occupants. It's only thin sheetmetal holding them up.
That said, both are "sport bars" and not roll cages. The Jeeps bar does have some side triangulation but it's only in the front-rear direction and most of the time the force comes laterally to the sides. Neither were designed to save lives as a cage would do. They are more for looks. You want safety... tie the B pillar to the frame and add in an A pillar (tied) and more tubing between with webs or gussets.

:)I do appreicate both of your inputs on this subject that has been greatly debated on this site.

All of us that Race Cars understand and depend on a structurally sound Roll Cage along with a host of other saftey equipment to keep us safe. Having said that you can never predict nor prevent the unknown and the force of any impact!

Although speeds are greatly reduced in a Jeep the threat of injury is still present since in essence your sitting in a tin can!............while some here debate the cost and the lack of need or weigh factors of use or effect on a scale of 1-10 but never seem to really consider there safety.

Personally, I would not waste my time welding or bolting in some bars that will have little effect , value or protection in the event of a rollover , but to each his own.
:D:D:D:D

My input on this is my personal experience, I had a Chevy pu with a chrome (sport bar) in the bed with off road lights. I rolled this truck one night and the (sport bar) kept the back of the cab from getting damaged the front got caved in and broke the w/s and it ripped off the lights but I walked away. So nothing is as good as a cage but a sport bar can still save your behind it's better than nothing.

Also, it's a huge upgrade to go from lap belts to 3 point seat belts all the way around too.

But you don't need to switch to a yj roll bar to get 3 pt. belts. Most later Jeeps had them.
