1979 CJ5 Renegade 258, t-18 pretty much stock except for a later model aluminum intake manifold and Gronk 2150.
Not sure why this would be leaking. It was leaking and I couldn't tighten it anymore so I bought a new hose and it still leaked so I replaced the pump since it was making noise and was of an indeterminate age and it still leaks.
What am I missing? I've tightened it as much as I can. The leak appears to be coming from the threads.
Oh and it leaks without the engine running...

OK Got underneath it and checked the leak and it appears to be leaking from the mounting stud. After looking at the old one it seems the studs screw into the pump and help seal the reservoir. These were a real bear to get off and just about as hard to thread back in to the new pump. I may not have them fully seated since I was worried about snapping them off. Does this sound right. I'm not looking forward to having to take this pump off again.

Thanks Lump. I don't think the problem is with sealing the threads since the hole is "blind" and not open to the reservoir. See attached.
Another problem I discovered is the PO had used metric bolts and forced them into the 3/8-16 threaded holes. I think even the mounting studs are metric so I'll need to replace those too but at least this explains why it was so hard to seat the studs. Nothing is ever easy on this Jeep...

Unfortunately you are the last year of the SAE bolts and flare fittings. 1980 AMC switched to metric and oring hose fittings. I can see a PO getting the newer pump without realizing it and just making it work. Even if the hole is blind the tank has a seal for each one, so you are correct that the bolt wasn't seated enough.

Thanks RiverandSand, it's starting to make sense now. I have the wrong (for my year) mounting studs. It figures. That explains why the other bolts would not work as well. I am assuming I can get new studs from NAPA and that should solve my leak issues for now.
It's always something...
 
It might be best, to just replace the PS pump and start fresh.
Those threads will never be 'rite' now.

I was going to prove Lumpy wrong but nope. Shoulda known better. The pump cracked at the threads. So... now I need a new pump and the studs. Anyone know where to find them? I struck out at NAPA and no other parts house lists them. Summits/Jegs have some but they look too short.

As a last resort I may make my own.

Rockauto has both pumps w/reservoir and without, you choose manufacturer. Make sure your hoses are flare type and not oring style. Also check your steering box. In pic you have the pressure fitting looks oring, can't see the flare.
Junkyard may be option for the bolts, just look for a 70s car or truck with a GM pump, the bolts are pretty much the same.

Make sure the fitting on the line matches the pump's fitting, and is not damaged.

Yea shipping the core back is a hassle, however rockauto provides a no charge return label. Plus you have to wait for parts.
The new pump is definitely a flare style, still looks oring on the old one.
You should be good to go now.
 
Problem solved.
Bought a reman pump form O'Reillys and while it was a few bucks more there was no shipping and I had it the next day. Plus, it came with the correct mounting studs! However one was too short so I created one out of 2" of 32/8" threaded rod. Worked fine and now I have a non-leaking power steering pump.
