I am in the market for a lift kit for my 77 CJ5 . It currently has stock springs and lift shackles up front as well as wore out rear springs and some very long rear shackles. I am running a 31 inch 10.50 tire. I would like some clearance as it will be on the sand dunes often. No mud ever, nothing off road as in trails and such. Looking for a bolt on kit with shocks and pitman arm if needed. Was looking at a 4 inch kit but will I need that much?

4" will be way to much for 31's and I would look at something in the 2-1/2" area. Throw out the shackles and get a spring package with the lift you want, you won't need a drop pitman with 2-1/2" lift.

Sasqauch, so if I went back to oem spring shackles and bushings with say a 2-1/2 inch rancho kit I would get the look and lift I am wanting to clear my 31's and have ample clearance. The current front shackles are aftermarket daystars, the rear shackles are some homemade junk that was on the jeep when I bought it. I am hoping the new springs will tighten the jeep up as far as handling. Will there need to be any driveline modifications done with a 2-1/2 inch lift. IE, will the Transfer Case need to be dropped, or will the drive shafts need to be lengthend. Will new stock shackles work with the new springs. I want a nice lift, money is an object but I will not skimp on parts if aftermarket parts are required to make it work.

Thanks, Dennis

If you go with a kit it will probably come with correct shackles for that perticular lift. Your driveshafts will prob be OK and no T case drop needed. I would look at the Old Man Emu kit if I were going to that size lift, they are more than some but your talking about a key item were quality will make a difference. As far as handling improvement goes it may help and is going to give you the right start in correcting any other issues you may have like loose steering components etc.

Here is my 77 with a 2.5" lift on 33" swampers we installed newyears eve, 2.5" of lift would be really nice for your 31s

Robert are those wide track axles?

No they are not. The tires are 13.50 wide and not sure of the BS of wheels. But waggy axles should be installed very soon :)

Dennis these are stock length shackles with like mentioned 2.5" of spring lift. My driveshaft angles are pretty good and no steering issues either.

here is my with 31" tires and a 2.5" lift.

If you never plan to go bigger than 31x10.5's than a 2 1/2" spring kit will be pleanty of lift. For dune running I would stick with high quality springs like R.E. or O.M.E.
