I use my 79' CJ-5 as a snow plow vehicle. It is no longer registered and is pretty wore out, but still going.
Anybody know where the voltage regulator is located on my 79 CJ5 ?
I am having intermittant starting problems. Sometimes it spins right over after sitting a short spell and sometimes it just grunts and needs the battery charger. This is the second battery in two years and I have decided it must not be charging properly. When I am plowing snow and have the headlights on with flashers, I watch the voltage gauge drop down to 10V or nothing. I shut off lights, flashers and the guage works its way back to 12 - 14V.
Any help to problem and of course location of voltage regulator will be greatly appreciated.
thanx

The regulator is mounted inside the alternator housing.

Make sure all connections are clean and tight.

(engine running) Ground the alternator with a screwdriver by touching the tab at the rear of the alternator and alternator body.

If the voltage raises replace the regulator.

If the voltage drops replace the alternator.

Thank you Posi. This answers my question. I studied the Chilton manual but it did not note where it was located. Your follow up procedures will be very helpful also. I won't get to this repair until the outside temperature warms a little. It is too cold working in the garage.
thanx again
