I'm buying a lift kit , and i want to have both tires in the rear spinning for sure when i do this. I have an 86' CJ7 with a Dana 44 rear. I'm leaning towards the dana true trac Limited slip, because i will be driving it on the road as well and don't want i to be locked up the entire time.I really only want to spend maybe $400-500 on one of these at the MAX, hopefully cheaper. I feel like i've found the true trac for around 350 places.

Anyone have a advice on what i should buy or where i can find one for a descent price?

I installed a Spartan in the front Dana 30 in mine 2 months ago and like it - no issues.

You do know that a Limited slip will not keep both tires spinning all the time right. Only a locker will do this.
The only new locker you can get for the money you want to spend will be a lunch box locker which will not be that friendly on the street.
Save a few hundred more bucks and get a selectable for both on and off road.

To me a selectable locker is the only way to go but you can’t do that for the kind of money you want to spend.

Truetrac is not a true locker, but IS a HUGE improvement over an open diff, and will not wear out like a clutch type Limited Slip. That said, if you get a truetrac, you'll have to have someone install it unless you can set up gears, so probably looking at $400-500 for the truetrac + installation.

That said, if you're looking for added traction, with no loss in street manners, your only choices are a Limited slip (of which the truetrac is the best) or a selectable locker (ARB air locker, OX, etc) and of those the truetrac will be the cheapest by about 1/2 by the time you buy it and have it installed.

I have a truetrac to install in my rear on my green Jeep, and plan to get another for the rear of my tan Jeep. I don't want a true locker because of road manners, and I don't want to spend the $$$ on a selectable. I am going to put a spartan in the front on both, since you can unlock your front hubs and it makes the front locker disappear on the road.

I pretty much completely agree with the above posts, I also suggest that if you are going to install a new Limited slip or locker, it is a real good idea to buy the complete install kit for the required shims, seals and bearings which will set you back somewhere around $200 or less for my CJ I also purchased front and rear True Tracs with all new bearings and seals

Thanks, ya i plan on getting the true trac. I have a 44 not real sure of the gearing yet ive still yet to run the tag on the dif cover, but where did you buy your true trac from? And yes i have someone who can install and set the gearing for me thats not the problem, he recommended i get the true trac as well.

So the real question is did you order it from a certain site?, or local 4x4 shop. i know of one near me but haven't checked it out yet.

I bought my trutrac from summit racings ebay store. It was slightly cheaper than there regular site and beat everyones price that i could find after shipping. I ordered it and had it on my door step in two days. I am doing the same as you. I and running a trutrac in the rear and will have a locker for the front later on.

I too have a 86' CJ7 with Dana 44 rear and I have an electric OX locker (Spartan locker in front). Nice to just press a button on the dash when I need the rear locked. Also nice to do 180's when I want to play (climb, get the rear end loose).

Limited slip DOES NOT work as advertised. Did the obstacle course at Jeep Beach in Daytona and had to wait on Limited slip guys getting stuck on hills and obstacles.

It boiled down to cost for me. My latest build will not be driven too hard offroad and the selectable locker cost was more than I wanted to spend. I spent plenty on these axles for both rebuilds including the brakes. I have an ARB air locker in my other Jeep and it is nice but rarely used. The Trutrac is very strong and a popular choice among drag racers so I know it can handle abuse.

Not all LSD's are created equal. The factory LSD's are clutches and wear out quickly. The Truetrac uses gears and while it isn't as good as a true locker offroad, it's loads better than the OEM/ clutch LSD's.

I know I'm late to this party, but why hasn't anyone brought up the Detroit Locker? I've got it in the AM 20, on and off the street for mucho miles, and I love it. Not a single problem for many many years. This is the way I would go again.

Im even later to the party. I have a lockright in my AMC20 and I have no problems at all. Drive great on road and turns and perfect on the trail.
