stock gear box is leaking. i'd like to replace it with a gear box that will offer better handling than what it has now.

seems like i saw a thread a few months ago about swapping a PS box off a Transmission am or camaro or something like that and was a direct swap. does this sound right?

at any rate, i'm looking for a year, make, and model for car that has box that will be direct swap into 1981 CJ7 mounting bracket with no changes to hoses or PS pump but will offer improved steering over the stock gear box. any suggestions that fit this scenario?

In my opinion, the best gearbox for a CJ is the one that it came with. It can be sent to a rebuilder for a little more than what it costs for a over the counter rebuilt job. I purchased a Cardone rebuilt box and the gearing was a bit different and slightly disappointing.

I second Torxhead. The Saginaw 800 is a superb steering gearbox. Just make sure your whole system is flushed and clean otherwise grit and grime will eat the rubber seals. For $65 investing in new hoses and $65 more for a new pump is not a bad investment. Trust me I know I'm working on it right now.

By far the best Power steering guy in the business.......send him yours and he will rebuild it at a reasonable cost........ask about doing a variable ratio for your Jeep...........that's what it needs.

Yours should be a series 800 Saginaw which is near the best that can be had. Don't mess around with a bunch of junk yard junk! It's steering you really need it.

:D:D:D:D

While you have the steering box out check the U-joint and coupler on the shaft between the steering column and the steering box. Half of the slop in my steering turned out to be a worn out U-joints and coupler.
