Lot of exhaust

Oh, in need of help. I have a 84 CJ7 6 cyclindar and have just corrected my vaccum leak. However, I have a lot of exhaust coming out of my tailpipe. It is blowing constantly and I can't tell if the smoke is black or white. Not sure but it seems like I am wasting gas quickly. Does it has something to do with the carb? What can I do so i can drive without my top?

Yes, I also had a leak in the muffler that I replaced. So, now it seems that all the smoke is now coming out of the tail pipe.

is it using oil?

Yes, it sat for 6 months while I was deployed. Then when I shipped it from Hawaii to Florida. Not sure if it is using oil. I have an oil leak from somewhere (think it is from the cover). No, haven't done a compression test.

Ya valve covers (if thats the cover you mean) on AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l leak by design.

Well as for the valve cover, check all the bolts that secure it and if they need a little tightening then good...otherwise you may need to pull it off and replace the gasket.
The smoking exhaust, a compression check is a good place to start. If it smoked mainly when started then cleared up conventional wisdom would say possibly bad valve guide seals although not a sure thing. If it smokes all the time and burns oil then I would tend to think piston rings and the compression test would somewhat validate that. When you check the compression if you have a low # on a cylinder try a squirt or two of oil into the cylinder and recheck, if no change and still low the maybe a bad valve but concidering smoke is your prob and not poor performance that is a little unlikely.
