MAJOR Slop in Steering

Hello, i just bought a 1985 CJ7 Laredo , and one of the first things i notice looking at it was that it had a LOT of slop in the steering, my dad believes it to be a problem with something in the gearbox, but i do not what to look for. please say if i need to add any information that may be useful.
