Hey all,
Newbie here, and I know it MAY LOOK like I'm asking the SAME question that's been answered a dozen times, but I'm not, (at least it's a variation).
I bought a 77 CJ7 with manual steering and play in the steering wheel of about 2-3 inches, (I can move the steering wheel without the tires moving).
It has a 2" body lift and stock suspension.

I am planning to convert the manual to power steering in the coming weeks.
My question is:
Should I mess with issues in the steering now, or just wait until I convert it? I know it sounds stupid, but just looking for some friendly advice.

Just looking at several posts on steering weel play, it seems there could be a problem with any of the several pieces that I will need to replace during the mod.
Any help is appreciated.
Also, anyone reccomend a god site for conversions?
Thanks!!

Chris,

First off you should check everything in the steering system right down to the wheel bearings..........every part from the steering wheel to there could have issues and will need to be addressed.
Since 1977 had factory power steering , I would take a trip to the wrecking yard and take a look at the brackets, steering box , Pittman Arm & the steering shaft to the firewall. Also if you can get the brackets , pulleys & PS pump off of a donor w/ the same motor I would grab them.
The Power steering box is longer and may have a 4 bolt mount versus a 3 for the std.. Make sure you get a Pittman Arm off of a Power steering box preferably from a donor of the same year. They are different than the manual box. There are plenty of after market gear box re-builders out there including parts guys like Napa Etc, If you have to change mounts , make sure its done correctly.

don't be surprised if you end up needing to rebuild the pump and/or gear box but to have all the bits and peices without a lot of searching is nice.

I would also ask if they have the double pulleys for the crankshaft and waterpump
