Let's debate !

Here another tech question that came in today:

I am in the middle of building my first ground up vehicle and I am starting with a 1980 Jeep CJ7 that I am turning into part Jeep/ part buggy. I acquired a stock SBC 350 TBI and I am debating on what Transmission I should run, I am trying to Keep It Simple Stupid as muc as I can incase something breaks it will be an easy fix. I will drive it daily once in a while for fun and to the trails but its main purpose is a toy/ trail rig, so I have been debating between the 700R just because it has an Overdrive which would be nice for on the road but I am a bigger fan of manual transmissions so I am also looking into the SM465 whic also has a great 1st gear but no OD, I have looked in the NV4500 but they go pretty high aound here, if you can even find one and replacement parts are more expensive. What Transmission do you think would be best for me?

Thanks for your help!
-Joey

Joey,

My advice is go with the SM-465. It's tough, simple, and you said you like manual transmissions. The only problem I ever had with mine was it would pop out of 3rd gear, but I had it rebuilt and am putting it in my next build up. The 700R4 isn't a bad Transmission , but it's not the strongest thing either. The NV-4500 is OK, but it requires expensive oil, isn't as tough at the SM-465, and is expensive. I vote the simple man plan all the way.
