I am replacing all manual clutch mechanism due to an accident. Should I just go for the hydraulic set up or stick with the manual ? Is there a big difference with the hydraulic ? Also I have a CJ frame with a YJ tub. Would I then need to get the YJ set up than the CJ fitment ?

I too have a YJ tub and went with the hydro clutch, mostly because I didn't want to cut another hole to be able to use the manual clutch.
Just get the master and slave for a CJ. I don't however, remember if I used a YJ pedal or the CJ4 cly clutch pedal. (all 84-86 4 cyl were hydro clutch but had different slave cylinders) IIRC weren't all YJs' hydro? You should have the hole in the tub firewall for the master.

I'll stick with the mechanical one my '85 CJ7 came with.
Seen to many hydro ones fail on the trail....

I have a hydraulic set up that I bought used off a guy years ago, I have a YJ tub that already had the hole open for the master cylinder so it was pretty easy, I kept the YJ pedal set but swapped my CJ brake pedal into it, Works great very smooth and effortless

I've had a number of manual clutch linkages come apart under severe articulation and never had a hydraulic one come apart.

Not to derail the thread.
Mine is an '84 original 4cyl and has a manual clutch and linkage that appears to all be factory - firewall paint is original and undisturbed.
Maybe there was a cutoff when they swapped to hydro clutch?

That is unusual. The parts manual doesn't list a manual linkage for the AMC 150 . The only bell housing listed doesn't have the "hole" for the manual throw
out arm.

Question about your 4 cyl. Are the intake and exhaust manifolds on the same side or one on each side (the GM 4 cyl) ?

The 4cyl is long gone with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in its place.
The throwout arm, bell housing and everything else could have come from the donor vehicle but it is an 84 manifold and block. Not sure if the T-4 came stock either unless the VIN could provide that.

Love my hydraulic clutch !

My 80 has the original hydraulic clutch system, the only difference is the bracket which mounts to the chevy bellhousing and a adjustable clutch rod. I prefer a hydraulic setup over the mechanical type, especially for engine swaps.

My 85' dumped it's Jeep jewelry on the trail and road 6 times over a few years. YJ tub on a CJ frame. I-6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l manual clutch no hydro.

I got sooooo sick of that piece of cunfucation.

Tried machining brass cups to replace the nylon ones, even created a spring replacement to keep the cups in the bell crank. Custom brackets to manage the lift (changes your angles and tips the crank putting strain).

Anyway. Got smart eventually and bought the Novak rebuildable hydro kit and splurged on the braided hoses. Even picked up a complete rebuild kit for the trail box.

Tossed the T-5 at the same time and fit it up with a new flywheel, clutch, 98 AX15, and fresh Dana 300 complete with twin sticks.

Never looked back.

Go hydro! Seriously.

(Mines a daily driver in harsh winter. I plan on being burried in it. It will get me out of that hole if I happen to wake up.)

I just found out the other day that my YJ tub is a 92 since the clutch master cylinder went out and stranded me, amazingly the closest parts store had one in stock for $30ish and I was back on the road in no time

When I used to offroad alot my mechanical clutch linkage left me broken down more than once. I converted my Scrambler to Hydraulic and love it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
