Hi guys. I bought a Midwest 5 gallon jerry can...nice, but it doesn't have a "lip" around the bottom. I was planning on using the Crown/Smittybilt D8007 to hold it but I'm not sure it will work as that bracket looks to have a channel for the lip rather than a flat bottom. I haven't ordered it yet but was hoping someone here could tell me from experience what works and what doesn't. Many thanks!

Well, that style of can holder does require a "lip" to hold it in. I do have that holder and it seems to work just fine. There is another style of holder that you could use:https://www.bing.com/images/search?...8017557704542437&selectedIndex=213&ajaxhist=0, It even comes with a metal hold down strap. I would suggest making sure you come up with something you know will work so you don't drill to many extra holes in your CJ.

Thanks. I guess I can always buy a lipped one if I have to. I'm trying to attach the bracket to a spare tire mount that will come through the wheel center. I'm not as mechanically minded as most on here so I'm trying to keep it easy. I can drill holes in the mount...but I don't reckon I can make a "lipless" jerry can work! :) Thanks again!

A while back I went through the same procedure. First, which can do you have? The true Jerry or NATO can is different from the American can. Most of the mounts for the American can won't fit the NATO can. Even the fairly generic can holder Torx. linked. I actually prefer the NATO can. But Smittybilt makes a basket type can holder that will work with about any can type. My Jerry cans fit loosely so I modified/tightened it to fit the NATO Jerry can.

One thing I'll warn you about. Make absolutely sure your tire carrier will hold the weight of both your tire and 5 gallons of gas bouncing around way out back.

There are some cans specially made to go in a spare tire, not 5 gallons, but very well thought out. They are expensive though, especially for plastic. They aren't just ordinary plastic though. You can park a truck on one with no damage. Now that's heavy plastic.

That's a good point Hedge, So that's 30 lbs. plus riding as far back as a spare tire is and bouncing around especially in the dirt. Make sure those wheel studs have enough thread to support that weight. I have heard of guys driving CJs getting bumped from behind though, including me. At that time, I was not carrying any cans.

I believe you mean 30-pounds, not gallons. I have a pretty good swing away tire mount made by warn on my TJ and I'm afraid to hang more weight on it. My CJ has a factory tire mount on the back of the tub and I sure won't hang any more back there.

Thanks Bill D, correction made. The oem CJ spare tire racks were quite weak, but probably just fine for a p235-15 tire.
