According to BDS the military wrap of their springs is supposed to go to the frame side mount. The reason for this is that they say most shackles don't have clearance for the wrap and the frame does.

They say that their springs have no orientation, either side can go to the shackle. It won't matter at all as the spring is mirrored - the same on both sides.

My thoughts, since I have revolvers and they have more then enough clearance, put the wrap to the shackle in case the spring ever breaks the spring won't come off. The shackle side has a heck of allot more distance to go then the frame side.

So, what are your thoughts?

Is there a correct way to put on MW springs?

My thought, and its only that, is to install the front springs with the MW up front, to absorb the abuse up there, and since you have room in back, use the MW on the shackles in the rear.

I had to think on that one for a minute, since I have a shackle conversion on mine...but yea, MW installed on the shackles on yours.

Years ago when I replaced my frame that has the shackle reverse I called RE to double check this. The mw goes on the frame side and not the shackle side. I'm sure they have a reason for this and they are the experts.

I did call and they told me that they went to the frame side but only because of clearance...

They said the the shackles did not allow the MW to go there. Since I have revolvers - there is more then enough clearance. If the spring was to break I would much rather have it stay fixed to the shackle.

Just wondering about what others think if they could mount the spring in either direction...

What do you think you would do if you didn't have the clearance issues? Shackle side or frame side?

Most likely the shackle would break before the spring mount would. So you would have extra support on the spring at the fixed mounting point to keep the axles moving the vehicle to get back home.

As long as the suspension is strong enough to suspend the weight of your jeep through the worst weather conditions long distance without damage to the vehicle. Anything else is suspension tuning to make it perform better to your personal choice.

Never thought about the ramifications of braking a spring on the frame side vs the shackle side.

Now, one other question...

Who has ever broken a spring at the eye? I haven't in over 28 years of wheeling... :)

The only spring I ever broke was on a tractor trailer, and that was because it was pulling a 156,000 lb load. On a Jeep? not even close to it. I'm pretty sure something else would let go before the spring would. As far as which way I would orient the wrap, I think I would mount them to the rear. Seems to me it would control spring wrap better, and not tend to delam the spring pack under heavy torque, giving the long flex leaf more support when It really needs it.

CJ, I put the same springs on my 79' a few weeks ago. I tried them both ways and ended up with the MW on the shackle end for both front and rear. My shackles are 1" over stock and they fit easily and look good. When I test fitted them with the MW on the frame side, the larger bushing on the non MW wrap end was wider than the shackle and I was afraid it would wear prematurely.... and I also thought it looked like :dung: (just my $0.02)
The jeep drives and handles GREAT now compared to the 1" springs that the PO installed. Good luck with yours and I hope you are as happy as I am with mine.

I have seen broken shackles.

I also have seen broken shackles and mounts riped loose from the frame but not a broken spring YET.
