hey guys, i just bought a '77 jeep project and have a major question about the rear breaks. well i guess i would but the previous owner evidently decided to cut them off with a torch! and now i need your knowledge to know what all i need to put them back together again. here's a couple of pics from the back side to show what i mean. i'll get some picks from the tire side once i get a jack tall enough to let me take the wheel off. :)

May be cheaper and easier to find someone selling a complete used axle. Parting all that together its gonna get expensive. Plus that looks to be one rusty axle. Maybe he couldn't get it apart, so he cut it off. Whatever you do, make sure to clean everything up and paint it with some rust resistant paint.

Wow! Just have to say WOW! Thought I had seen it all... :)

The easiest way to say what you need is - everything. :)

IMO - You would be better off purchasing another diff and deciding if it would be better to swap parts or just use the new diff. It would be best to find one with the same gear ratio if you can, then it would be a simple swap.

yeah that's kind of what i figured. :( the hard parts is going to be finding another rear axle in my neck of the woods. i've already been through most of the bone yards in the st. louis are and have found that most of them don't have any jeeps. so my parts pool is pretty Limited . if anyone has a bead on a bone yard with jeeps in the missouri/ illinois area drop me a line.

Ouch!! :wtf:

why would anyone do this?? Oh well, it's done.

do you have a budget on this?? I want to suggest rear wheel disks but that is about a grand +.

Someplace on the web I remember a complete brake assembly replacement from the back plate to the shoes and it doesn't seem that it was too expensive. I did not bookmark it and I have not been able to find it. I think it was one of the "hot rod/custom car" shops, it may be worth your time to keep looking.

I will check some more as time permits.:D

Have you tried using craigs list? I see quite a bit Jeep stuff on there (though I'm not looking in your area either)

craigs list here doesn't seem to yield a lot of parts. mostly whole jeeps.

yeah i've looked into the disk swap and about had a heart attack. my budget on this is pretty meager. if you happen to find the back plate + link please pass it along.

quick question, one local bone yard had the back axle off of a '79 cj. my differential is pretty much in the middle of the axle and the '79 is located pretty far off to one side. would the break parts still match up?? or do i still need to keep looking. did any of the newer cj's (80's and such) have disks on the back stock? and might be able to swap out to mine? thanks

according to Vato zone the 77 and 79 are different part numbers. This does not mean that it will not work, it does mean that you need to know what shoes to buy when it is time for a replacement.:D

CJs did not have rear wheel disks.:(

so i should be able to use the '79 set up? just have to remember that when i go to order break parts i need '79's not '77's? no conversions need to the rest of the break system? or the axle?

I have never done this so I will not bet my life on it but I would think that if the back up plate will bolt to the axle and the brake line will screw into the slave cylinder it should stop the Jeep. I can not see the drums or the cylinder being enough different to cause any problems. IMHO:cool:

I suppose there is the possibility that the drum is wide enough that you will not fit snug to the axle end and / or the lug bolts will be too short. that would mean the 79 axle is longer than the 77 and the replacements look the same from 76 to 83.

I think it would be worth looking into if this is the only game in town for you. What do they want for the whole axle?? I am still curious about how this ended up like this in the first place. I suspect you will find other surprises when you take what is left of the plate off.

there may also be issues with the E brake so be sure to grab the cable too.

find a parts house with both drums and or both shoes and check the width, the diameter won't matter much as the wheel is the same on both.

You should be able to buy the backing plate with everything on it brand new for 100 or so per side. You'll just have to run new brake lines and fix the flange.

:agree: I have seen them someplace , just can't remember where.:bang:

I got what we are talking about for my 9". Just bolted on the backing plate with everything there. I got those from the guy that I bought my axle housing from.

His company is Quick Performance. Might contact him and see if he can point you in the right direction.

Smokin' deal. Just make sure you check the brakes. You may be paying the 75 bucks for just the backing plates. I would expect all of the hardware to be junk.

that is a good deal, crack the pumpkin and check for shrapnel and wear and of course the ratio.

they want $75 cash for the whole axle and the rims and tires that are on it.
