Well, here is one for the books. After meeting the wife and kid for dinner I hopped into my jeep to head home. Pulled out of the restaurant parking lot to the mouth of the driveway when the horn just started to honk all by itself. Gave the button a little bang with the side of my fist. The horn stopped honking. Great so far. Started to turn onto the street when the whole steering wheel popped off the shaft:eek: and left me without a way to steer. Had to slowly back down the the access road for the restaurant as far as I could without steering. What a joy! Fortunately I was near a Sears and was able to buy a few tools - allen wrenches, socket and ratchet - and fix it while sitting just far enough off to the side of the driveway for people to get by. Somehow the nut had backed off the shaft and when I gave the horn button a pop the spring pushed the wheel off the splines and the nut kept me from being able to force the wheel back down enough so I could guide the jeep out of the way.

Anyway, I got it back together well enough to get back home but I'm not sure the PO installed it properly to begin with so I'll have to check it out more in the morning. Just glad this didn't happen at speed out on the roads some place. This could have been messy.

And speaking of Sears, the two young men working in the tool department were unbelievable. I asked to be pointed in the direction of the allen wrenches and the response I get - What do they look like? Really?!!! Then I asked where I would find a crescent wrench. Yep, same response - What does it look like? Wow! How can that be? And, why are these two young men working in the tool department? And how can they not know what a crescent wrench is? Just makes me shake my head.

A picture of the offending steering wheel would be really help full. Ive never installed a "momo" wheel on a jeep but would start by trying to find a installation guide online and make sure it was installed correctly. I know in stock fashion the spring on a CJ column in under the plate but have no idea why it would be on the outside of your. Some pics please.

Sorry to take so long with the pictures. Got this all put back together.

The PO only had two of the three bolts inplace that hold the top and bottom halves of the steering wheel hub together. Looks like they would keep the top half with the actual steering wheel from just spinning on the shaft. All three hole didn't quite line-up so a couple of passes with a rat tail file and I was able to install the third bolt.

The bolts seem to tighten up/bottom out but the heads don't touch. Plus you wouldn't be able to tighten them any farther anyway because of the main nut is in the way.

It certainly seems to be correct and works almost flawlessly. I say almost because now there is a squeak that seems to be coming from between the spring, steering column, and the hub of the steering wheel. And as often as a jeep wheel needs correction as you're driving down the road its getting a little annoying. Any ideas?
