Well, here is one for the books. After meeting the wife and kid for dinner I hopped into my jeep to head home. Pulled out of the restaurant parking lot to the mouth of the driveway when the horn just started to honk all by itself. Gave the button a little bang with the side of my fist. The horn stopped honking. Great so far. Started to turn onto the street when the whole steering wheel popped off the shaft and left me without a way to steer. Had to slowly back down the the access road for the restaurant as far as I could without steering. What a joy! Fortunately I was near a Sears and was able to buy a few tools - allen wrenches, socket and ratchet - and fix it while sitting just far enough off to the side of the driveway for people to get by. Somehow the nut had backed off the shaft and when I gave the horn button a pop the spring pushed the wheel off the splines and the nut kept me from being able to force the wheel back down enough so I could guide the jeep out of the way.
Anyway, I got it back together well enough to get back home but I'm not sure the PO installed it properly to begin with so I'll have to check it out more in the morning. Just glad this didn't happen at speed out on the roads some place. This could have been messy.
And speaking of Sears, the two young men working in the tool department were unbelievable. I asked to be pointed in the direction of the allen wrenches and the response I get - What do they look like? Really?!!! Then I asked where I would find a crescent wrench. Yep, same response - What does it look like? Wow! How can that be? And, why are these two young men working in the tool department? And how can they not know what a crescent wrench is? Just makes me shake my head.
