I have a question for anybody who has installed a Moser one piece axle into CJ7 .

To start off with I snapped the key locating the hub onto the driver side axle. Instead of going with a replacement two piece I desired to upgrade to a Moser one piece axle.

Well I recieved the kit yesterday and decided to ckeck the fit of the components. When I fit the bearing spacer into the axle tube I noticed that the spacer did not fit that far into the housing. In fact, there was only .300" from the lip of the spacer to the face of the flange. When I placed the bearing against the spacer the bearing extended over .340" beyond the flange. That would me that I would need to trim a over 1/4 inch, .260", from the spacer to be within the .080" allowance.

I called Moser and the technical support person wasn't concerned that the spacer did not go further into the housing. I mentioned that while I couldn't get an exact measurement, the spacer was sitting approx. .200" from where the inner seal would sit. He was not concerened about the distance from the spacerto the inner seal. However, he was concerned about the amount of material that needed to be removed from the spacer. He mentioned that I shouldn't remove more than an 1/8 in. of material from the spacer. However, he had no answers as to why the spacer did not find further into the housing. He did imply that the spacer was tapered. I measured the spacer and it had a constant OD of approx 2.5 inch. For reference the spacer is approx. ,630" high.

Before I call Moser back tomorrow I have a couple of questions

For people that have installed a Moser axle how much did you have to trim off the spacer?

Are far should the spacer fit in the housing?

Since my spacer is not tapered could I have received the wrong spacer?

I would appreciate any suggestions asto what I should bring up when talking to Moser.

Thanks

Rick

UPDATE

Well, I called Moser back and spoke to a different tech person.

First he said that the spacer may need a little persuasion to set it in the axle housing. He said to mount the inner seal and to install the spacer. I asked about removing the spacer after driving it into place if the spacer needed to be adjusted He said that shouldn't be a problem because most of the time no adjustment is necessary.

I went ahead and installed the inner seal but decided to measure the distance from the inner seal to the face of the flange. It measured 1.200". I then measured the thickness of the spacer and bearing and had a measurement of 1.310".

This means that I need to trim approx. .030" off the spacer to meet the .080" spec This seems contrary to what I would expect based on Moser and what I have read on line.

My question at this point is what am I doing wrong.

The inner seal feels like it is firmly set, but should I use a bigger hammer to drive it further in?

Am I missing something in measuring the depth of the installed seal and the combined thickness of the spacer and bearing?

Rick
