Spent 4 hrs today trying to get my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l back into my 74 CJ5 . The damn thing wouldn't line up with the pilot bushing for some reason. Checked the I.D. of the bushing to make sure it was the right one and it is. So now we are pulling the Transmission and the Transfer Case out and put it back it as one unit. Alot more work put will be easier going back in.:censored:

Nothings ever easy!

Can you install engine/Transmission /t case as a unit? Body on?

Clutch is lined up right? For SURE?

Well you feel the main shaft going in to the hole but it would stop like it was catching on something. I say feel cause ya can't see anything at that point. And I'm hoping I will be able to get them back in with the body on? Hoping I will not have to pull or lift the body. Can't wait to drop my SBC in to it, with the body off the frame.

Did you try turning the engine (or the Transmission input shaft) just a little, to line up the splines on the input shaft with the splines on the clutch disc?
