Hi, I just got my first cj last week. Its a 76 CJ5 with a AMC 304 . I got this as a play toy and want to put a lift under it. Nothing crazy just a 2 1/2 or so. I really want some advise on this as I want to do it my self.... How hard? Im fair with working on things and just want some advise from you guys? i.e. types, steps involved, and anything to look out for. I plan on posting pics soon.

:ww:to the site. Congratulations on you new CJ.:chug:
You gotta love a V8 CJ. "Rubicon Express" makes a nice 2 1/2" kit.

Hey spinner! Welcome to our site! :chug:

Putting on a lift kit is a pretty easy operation.

It's basically jack up and support one end of the CJ, remove the shocks (sometimes easier to do when on the ground), support the axle, remove the u-bolts (sometimes it's easier to cut them off, remove the hanger bolts and drop the spring (s). Just reverse for the installation. (much of the order I wrote can be changed)

There may be a few other parts that will need to go on, shims for the axle, extended brake lines, a Transmission drop spacer or even a drop pitman arm. The pieces you will be installing will depend on the kit you buy.

It usually is about a half day project depending on the tools you have available! :)

Tell us what your intentions are for this CJ and we can help you get it up to your specifications! :chug:

A pipe wrench comes in handy for opening up the spring mounts.;)

an air ratchet or impact wrench is handy when you put the U bolts on, they are fine thread, with lock nuts and about 5 miles(exaggeration) long. after you have done two or three with a regular ratchet and deep well socket you will understand.
You can do it without power wrenches but it is not near as much fun.

5 miles,, he is just joshing, they are more like 20, oh, check those brake lines after the lift to see if they still are long enough.

just that much notch in the wheel well got me 6 more inches of leg room, that may not sound like much when looking at your tape measure laying flat, but that's not the way you sit, I wouldn't recommend any more than the 6" , the tire only touches the edge of the notch when its really tucked up there, good luck on your jeep and remember if your not having fun, your done

wow. I see a project coming on

just a note from my experance, if you can get the springs off first, or even just one end of each, this is going to make so, so much easer to get a 1/2" impact gun on top of those nasty U" bolts, and dont be afraid to put a tourch to them, including the bushing, burn them out if you need to, get this chit called PB Blaster best stuff at the auto parts store for them old nuts and bolts

I've started stocking up on cut off wheels for my grinder.... I do have a problem that has just come up. My jeep is jumping out of reverse unless I hold it in. I guess I need to have the Transmission looked at. Has anyone else had this problem? I was given a spare 3speed and transfer casse when I bought the jeep, but was told it came out of a j10? not sure if it will work or not.

what kind of shape are the motor mounts and transmision mount in??
take a look at them and give them a good shake while you are down there taking pictures and finding part numbers.
