My 86 CJ7 has a horrible, and sickening exaust from it. It has a new exaust system (cat, muffler, pipes), so i think i've done all i can in that respect

It now has a Holley remanufactured 64-1510 BBD carb on it. It must be an old carb model too, since I can't find any info on them.

Almost all of my vac lines, sensors, stepper motor, and switches relating to it or to controlling it were removed and/or cut off by po.

I am by no means experienced when it comes to all the emission controls on these jeeps, but from what i've read, people eliminate them and run different carbs and so on, but don't have the bad smelling exaust.

My jeep runs fairly well, a little sluggish on really cold mornings till it warms up, and kinda crappy mpg, but other than that exaust, its a good driver.

So, i'm hoping maybe the carb is running very rich, which if thats true, maybe i just need to adjust it leaner. But I can't find instuctions online about it.
Anybody have any suggestions? I have pics of engine if that would help any

THx in advance

To rich a fuel mix.
What do your plugs look like?
Why do you run a 'cat' when you have all other smog stuff removed?
LG

If you fill out your profile we will know a bit more about how to answer the question, engine size , I am guessing a v8? What kind of shape is the PCV in??

Exhaust was put on by po as a condition of my buying it. Its a straight 6, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ...I believe its the original engine, just with everything relating to the original carb removed.
Does anybody have any experience with this carb,or a procedure for adjusting it? I haven't checked the plugs in a little while, I'll check them tomorrow first thing. I'm gonna assume they are fouled...

Stupid Question Time: Is the exhaust smell something you notice when the jeep sits idling or is a smell you experience while driving down the road? Not saying Lumpy isn’t correct about the fuel mixture being too rich but back draft of the exhaust into the cab area is also a common issue.

No,it happens with top up or down, but obviously u can smell it more when your not moving. But the smell is ALOT stronger/potent than normal car exhaust ....kinda funny to watch cars back up 50 yards when they follow me cuz of the smell:eek:

So is it a strong gas, sulfur, rotten eggs, skunk, what is the odor?
Hope it's not coolant burning..
You'll never forget that once you smell it

Its not antifreeze, I know that smell too...tough to pinpoint what it smells like but i I would say it smells of strong car exhaust with maybe gas mixed in to really make it nauseating.

Not sure where J33py is from, but in VA I need to keep the cat on to pass the visual part of the state inspection. It technically should have all of the hoses and stuff too, but they have never bothered me with that. But the cat they will.

And I agree to check the plugs. Mine runs rich as well and I have a pretty good exhaust/fuel smell. I just haven't gotten around to adjusting the carb. I really need to rebuild it or got efi. Maybe some day.

I would offer that it will take a bit more than adjustment. time to re jet?

It could be an issue with the float level or the needle and seat assembly letting in too much fuel or the normally computer controlled carb is set to run rich or even a stuck or inoperative choke. I think most guys switch carbs to like a Motorcraft or Weber after ditching the computer stuff.

The difference between the Holly and the MC are almost negligible except that the parts do not interchange. I would be interested in what main jets are in it. If it was sold as a performance carb for a dirt track car or something like that it may be way rich for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

Where does the exhaust exit the body of the Jeep?
What carb do you have? Post pictures to help us, help you.
