83 jeep cj7
I am starting a 83 CJ7 body off frame build and want to build the suspension first . We want to lift it about 2 or 3 inches and find a good balance between street and off road drive ability. The jeep was driving when it was tore down so none of the stock parts where in horrible shape but we want to replace the weak links. Any advice on what to replace where to start and who the best vendors are will help Thanks

Check the sponsors link at the top of page. Those are good places to start for replacement parts.

IF at all possible while you have it tore down change the front springs to 2.5" wide springs. It is very easy to do. I would also pick up a HD steering box brace and mount to reinforce the steering box area. If you want it to be a decent on road rig keep the sway bar and buy some disconnects for it. Spend the extra cash on good shocks.

I DO NOT like the hyd clutch. I never had a problem with a manual clutch, but I have had problems with hyd clutches. Mine went out while fourwheeling. Had to drive 20 miles back home with no clutch.

Not sure where the hydraulic clutch falls into this post but ok..

my father had a knee replacement and liked the way my hyd clutch felt when I put one in my old vett, so it is a must for this build

I'd rebuild all the safty items first, like the steering, brakes & new lines, and all the body mounts.
I use summit racing and Jegs a lot. Tellico 4X4 has always done be right also.http://www.tellico4x4.com/ You just have to shop around.

I guess what I really need to know is what are a stock cj7s weak links and where oem should be replaced with good aftermarket parts

Why do you have two threads on this?

Transmission and rear diff resealed body work started now its time to start throwing parts at this thing, but I am not sure what I got going on here this jeep had 31s on it ( with room ). Correct me if I am wrong but from what I have read 31s should not fit. Can I tell if this Jeep is at stock height just from the tire size it was running? My father said he did not think the Jeep had a lift. How can I tell now that it is tore down? The shackles are stock 3'' bolt to bolt. The body bushings are 3/4'' thick is this stock? The only reason this matters is we are shopping parts based on how the Jeep sat before the build. We don't want to think we are adding lift but end up with it lowered. By the way it is a Laredo if that matters.

I always run 31's on a stock setup. So unless they looked small it probley was stock.
