I'm planning a trek from Wichita, across the Great American Desert, to Longmont for a week-long jeep trip. We've been there once before, and ran the following trails:

Day 1: Storm Mtn, Johnny Park Rd., Pierson Rd.
Day 2: Ironclads, Plane Crash, Middle St. Vrain, Coney Flats
Day 3: Left Hand Canyon

We plan on doing the same this yr, with the exception of eliminating Storm Mtn, and adding a day to travel to Kelly Flats. We've always made our plans using Charles Wells' trail books, but he really doesn't mention anything else in the area which is rated difficult or moderately difficult.

My question is this: are any of the members familiar with other trails in the area which would fall into the mod to difficult categories, which would take up another couple of days? Any suggestions for loops, etc, would be helpful. I really believe that intel from people with "boots on the ground" is invaluable, and I thank you in advance for your responses.

I don't have any "boots on ground knowledge" of the area. What I usually do if I can't find anyone that knows much about the area is google it... :D

https://www.google.com/search?sourc...1.0.0.0.0.72.72.1.1.0...0.0...1ac.sGVt93v-O80

There are a bunch of u-tube videos of the area, reports from people on the trails, etc. I even seen one link to "trail damage" lol

Anyways, just thought I'd pipe in since no one had responded to you yet...

Cheers and happy trails bud!

Hey Oldguy, where is this at? I'd like some more info on this trip in general.. I am moving my family to Wichita next year, and I'll be looking for trip and trail buddies!

I'm guessing in Colorado? I've heard talk of Airplane crash trail..

When are you planning on comming out here? I am trying to get together some of the Front Range guys together just to meet each other and spend the day 4wheeling. Right now I have four plus myself it would be cool if you could join in with your friends. :)

Cant help but this sounds like fun especially the plane crash trail.

Here is a Internet site that has info on most of the trails in Colorado.
HTML:
TrailDamage.com. They have some good trail info. I have been on all the trails you mentioned except Left Hand. There really isn't many tough trails around here.

Sorry I missed your reply. We left on the 2nd, so I didn't see any of the posts til just now. We're a little short on good trails here in KS, but there are several really good, challenging areas in the state. They are about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs from Wichita. I'd be glad to tell you how to get there, and let you know when we're going. Hope you enjoy Wichita. It's not as dismal as you may have heard.

Mtnwhlr, sorry I missed your reply. We would have welcomed some company. Always a little on edge when it's just one jeep on rough trails. Had a great time. Small electrical problem cost us a few hours, and came home with a caved-in tailgate, but otherwise, no problems.

OldCJ, the airplane crash is a neat trail. Pretty rough going. It's an up-and-back. At the top of the trail, you walk a hundred yards or so over to the site of an old T-34 (I believe) military trainer crash. It was decades ago, but there is still a significant debris field on the mountain.

Pictures are ALWAYS welcome here..

Did you take any of the crash site....or your caved in tailgate and HOW it might have happened..
