I run a 1984 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and lately its been giving me problems, every now and then when I put the clutch in and let off the gas to either stop or turn my engine completely shuts off and my power steering turns off (obviously). im thinking that it is a fuel pump/line problem since it only shuts off when I put the clutch in and let off gas to stop or turn. It most likely is stalling due to lack of fuel when I let off the gas and put it in neutral. When im driving in gear on the gas it runs perfectly fine. However this only happens on the road, when I am in neutral idling in my driveway it doesn't shut off like it does on the main road before a turn. Any solutions?

Does it shudder or just die like the engine is starving? Sounds suspiciously to me like your clutch is not disengaging fully and causing a stall but I suppose it could be fuel too. Electrical or mechanical fuel pump?

could also be a vacuum leak in the carb causing this as you come down from a higher rpm

Ck the horseshoe connector on the coil.
Also, when did you last replace the fuel filter?
Is the fuel filter return line at the 12 O'clock position?
How much gas in the tank?

What is the mileage on the engine ?

been there done that, I'm with manic mechanic. first thing I would check is a loose or rotted vacuum line. I chased this problem one winter. Came down to a vacuum line that fragged in the sudden change to cold weather. Probably just happens to me but I have found that, even after putting all new lines on, the vaccum nightmare on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l has to be looked after as a scheduled maintenance issue.

i eliminated all my vacuum lines except for power breaks booster, pcv valve, vacuum advance on distributor. of course I dont have inspection and emissions where I'm at

What happens if you tap the skinny pedal when it starts to die? Does it light back up and idle fine? What's your (warm) idle speed?

AMC sometimes used to hang a dashpot on the carburetor to prevent exactly that sort of stall. All it did was let the throttle close slowly instead of quickly.

If it's stalling due to lack of fuel, then it won't ever get above about 35 mph; it'll run out of fuel. You use a TON more fuel cruising above 35mph than you do at idle.
